His passionate devotion to liberal causes encompassed civil rights, organized labor and freedom of speech, both in public service and private practice. He began his career in the Roosevelt administration and clerked for justices Cardozo and Frankfurter. He served as counsel for organizations, such as United Auto Workers under Walter Reuther's leadership and the NAACP, and individuals, including those targeted as communists by the House Committee on Un-American Activities. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Clinton for his work. The titles and inscriptions in this collection reflect his broad social network, personal interests and sterling reputation among his friends and allies. They include gifts from intimate associates, such as Rauh's early mentor Felix Frankfurter and client Victor Reuther, and sympathetic colleagues, like constitutional lawyer Daniel Sheehan. Together, the collection offers insight into the life of a distinguished and passionate advocate who helped shape the American civil rights movement. Signed.
