Presentation Copies from the Library of an Important Civil Rights Lawyer [Rauh, Joseph Louis, Jr. (1911-1992)]. [11 Titles Inscribed to Joseph Rauh and His Wife]. 10 hardcover books, 1 pamphlet. Varying imprints, 1947-2000. Books: hardcover cloth, very good to near-fine in lightly to moderately worn dust jackets, some with light fading, minor creases or small tears, underlining in pencil and ink in several places in The Ways of a Judge, all other titles internally clean with presentation inscriptions, most from authors, to Joe Rauh, Olie Rauh or the couple to half-titles or front free endpapers. Pamphlet: stab-stitched, light fading and shelfwear to exterior, wrappers starting to separate at foot but secure, internally clean, presentation inscription from Felix Frankfurter to front wrapper. An interesting collection. Further details of each title are included in the photos associated with this listing. $750. * Joseph Rauh was a central figure in the development of post-war liberalism in America. His passionate devotion to liberal causes encompassed civil rights, organized labor and freedom of speech, both in public service and private practice. He began his career in the Roosevelt administration and clerked for justices Cardozo and Frankfurter. He served as counsel for organizations, such as United Auto Workers under Walter Reuther's leadership and the NAACP, and individuals, including those targeted as communists by the House Committee on Un-American Activities. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Clinton for his work. The titles and inscriptions in this collection reflect his broad social network, personal interests and sterling reputation among his friends and allies. They include gifts from intimate associates, such as Rauh's early mentor Felix Frankfurter and client Victor Reuther, and sympathetic colleagues, like constitutional lawyer Daniel Sheehan. Together, the collection offers insight into the life of a distinguished and passionate advocate who helped shape the American civil rights movement. Signed.
