In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. MILAN. Piano di Regolamento per il Monte di Pietá in Milano. [Milan, 1785] Folio. 14 leaves (last blank). Woodcut of imperial arms at the head of first page. Publisher s wrappers with contemporary title label in manuscript on front cover. Imperial proclamation, dated 17th June 1785, setting out the aims, management and composition of the Milan Monte di Pietá, a kind of state pawnshop, which originated as a charitable lending establishment during the Middle Ages, charging only a modest interest. The three branches listed are S. Giuseppe, S. Ambrogio, and S. Carlo. Chapters 7 and 8 set out the rules for auctioning unredeemed pledges at the end of each month, where employees of the Monte Pietatis are not allowed to participate. The new laws were part of the sweeping reforms introduced in the interest of administrative efficiency within the imperial dominions under Joseph II (1780-90).

An Imperial privilege establishing a five-year trade monopoly for olive oil within the Austrian hereditary principalities, to be exercised by an oil company (Bartholomew Coreis & Co.) against payment of half a florin for every hundredweight of oil, as well as tolls and fees, to the treasury. With autograph signature of the short-lived Emperor Joseph and two counter-signatures, one by the court chancellor Johann Friedrich Baron Seilern (1646-1715, previously the architect of the ill-fated marriage of Princess Palatine Elisabeth Charlotte and the Duke of Orléans, later author of the Pragmatic Sanction). The owner of this early oil company could not be traced; he may be related to the Greek scholar Adamantios Korais, born in 1748 (his father Ioannes was a native of Chios). - Evenly browned due to paper; small paper flaw in center of gutter; contemporary binding professionally repaired in the fold. - Codex Austriacus III, p. 540-542. First printings of the revised codes of laws for the Austrian imperial dominions or 'crown-lands' including Bohemia, Moravia, and Slovenia. The second code deals exclusively with bankruptcy legislation. The new laws introduced by the Austrian Enlightenment Emperor on his accession to the throne were drafted to replace ethnic regional diversity with a centralized state ruled from Vienna to promote administrative unity and imperial power. The over-ambitious programme of sweeping reforms provoked universal opposition and had to be abandoned in the end. Fresh copies.

First French edition. 8vo. Contemporary calf (minor wear), re-backed, spine richly gilt in compartments. Overall a very good copy. [xxiv], xxxviii, 381, [ii] (approbation)pp. Paris, N. M. Tilliard, The present is a first translation into a Western language of the laudatory poem by the Qianlong Emperor about the city of Mukden (Manchu, also called Shengjing 'Rising Capital'). Mukden was conquered by the Jurchen (Manchu) leader Nurhaci (1559-1626) in 1625 from the Ming. He proceeded to move his entire administration to the town and built a large palace complex to accommodate them. From here the Manchus launched their attack on Northern China which led to the fall of the Ming Dynasty in 1644. Following the establishment of the Qing dynasty Nurhace was elevated to the first Qing emperor and given the name Taizu Emperor. Mukden remained the spiritual home of the Manchus and subsequent Qing Emperors continued to visit and expand the palaces. The 'Ode to Mukden' was written on the occasion of a visit by the Qianlong Emperor in 1743, who had it published in a beautiful palace edition in the same year ('Yuzhi Shengjing fu').

4to (176 x 224 mm). 1 p. on a bifolium. Addressed to Nicholas Esterházy, nicknamed "the Splendid", in German. - The later emperor Joseph II, famous for his enlightened and anti-clerical reforms, writes to Nikolaus Esterházy, the Hungarian prince and main patron of the composer Joseph Haydn, about another Hungarian noble, the count Christoph Erdödy, whose lavish lifestyle had forced him to borrow immense sums of money. Joseph complains that Erdödy's "confused legal disputes" ("seine verwirrten Rechtshändel") seem to drag his own name into these affairs. He asks Esterházy to investigate Erdödy's conduct and give him the warning that Joseph might be very displeased. Later in the 1770s Erdödy had to sell some of his land and estates. - Light browning, slight flaw to verso from opening of the seal (of which some remnants survive), but otherwise in fine and fresh condition. - Alfred Bovet (1831-91), his sale Charavay, 1887, lot 97.
