Hardcover first edition - First printing. A beautiful collaboration between this husband and wife, in which the city is "described by Elizabeth Robins Pennell, illustrated with 105 lithographs by Joseph Pennell. In the preface, Elizabeth notes that this was written "simply for the pleasure of gathering together my old memories of a town that is dear to me and my new impressions of it after the absence of a quarter of a century." The lithographs by Joseph Pennell are a record an old Philadelphia and of the new one, a record that "in a few years would be impossible for anybody to make, so continually is Philadelphia changing." Index. A large and heavy book, 552 pp. Fair condition only in red cloth with gilt lettering and top edge gilt (rubbing to the lettering on the spine, wear to covers and some fraying at the top of the spine, front hinge cracked) The contents are clean and tight and near fine, and the binding remains sturdy.

Cloth. Zustand: Fair. Various (illustrator). A profusely illustrated work of art history, exploring the art of lithography. Illustrated with 72 of the 79 listed plates. Joseph Pennell (July 4, 1857 April 23, 1926) was an American artist and author. Pennell was born in Philadelphia, and first studied there, but like his compatriot and friend, James McNeill Whistler, he afterwards went to Europe and made his home in London. He produced numerous books (many of them in collaboration with his wife, Elizabeth Robins Pennell), but his chief distinction is as an original etcher and lithographer, and notably as an illustrator. Their close acquaintance with Whistler led the Pennells to undertake a biography of that artist in 1906, and, after some litigation with his executrix on the right to use his letters, the book was published in 1908. This volume contains works by artists such as Goya, Whistler, Toulouse-Lautrec and many more. Hardbound volume with cloth covered spine and paper covered boards. Externally, sound. There is some wear to the extremities including rubbing to the boards, bumping to the corners and top and tail of the spine, and some discoloration to the boards. There is an ink inscription to the front blank endpaper and a few pencil markings to the rear duplicate preface. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are generally clean, with the occasional handling mark. The plates have not been bound into the volume according to the index, but form a separate unpaginated section at the end. Some of the plates are missing. Fair. book.
