In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good+. Good dj. First Edition. [light shelfwear, minor dust-soiling to top of text block, one-time owner's name and address inked on front endpaper; the jacket is worn along the top edge, with numerous shallow chips, abrasions, etc., there are a couple of closed tears with associated creasing at the bott…om of the rear panel, some paper loss at the top of the spine, and a tiny piece missing at the bottom edge of the front panel]. (B&W plates) A passionate argument against the then-current efforts to restrict immigration to America, a follow-up to her best-selling 1912 memoir "The Promised Land," still considered a classic of immigrant literature, in which she chronicled her own journey from Russia (present-day Belarus) to America at the age of thirteen, her public school education, and her assimilation into American culture. The success of the earlier book fueled her activism on behalf of immigrant rights, and made her a much sought-after lecturer for several years, although her writing career and public profile were unfortunately curtailed by a nervous breakdown she suffered in 1918, brought about in part by stress over her relationship with her husband due to his pro-German sympathies during World War I. The uncommon jacket has a beautiful wrap-around illustration by an artist whose name is printed a little fuzzily on the rear flap, and that I can't quite make out; last name possibly Booth or Boulle? (Definitely not Joseph Stella, who did the internal illustrations.) ***This book is among the nearly 150 items offered in ReadInk's new Catalog Number 4, "Booking Passage: Books on the Immigrant Experience." You can access this catalog and its contents in any one of three ways: (1) email us to request a PDF to be emailed to you; (2) view or download the catalog from the link on our website's main page; (3) browse the books individually (including a few that didn't make the cut for the catalog) on our website under these two subject headings: "Immigration: Fiction" and "Immigration: Non-Fiction.". Illustrated by Joseph Stella (illustrator).

Materials presented drawn largely from the Jean-Noël Herli Archive. "Exhibition invitations? I've seen a few. Any working art critic inevitably acquires an extensive knowledge of this genre of printed ephemera. Heralding gallery and museum shows, invitations flood the mailbox, crowd the desk and all too often accumulate so intractably on the kitchen counter as to seem part of the decor. You can't live with them, and until the show is over, you can't throw them out. Still, life without such art-world byproducts would be a lot more difficult. Not only do they convey the important facts -- the who, when and where -- of shows that need to be seen. They're also advertisements bent on seducing us into attendance by being clever, eye-catching or provocative -- although sometimes they nip interest in the bud. (There's probably no art lover with mailing-list credentials who hasn't held up some gallery announcement and said, "Forget it!") Invitations are style statements in a minor key, ancillary artworks of a collective sort. Designed by artists, by graphic designers, by art dealers and museum curators -- usually a combination of the above -- they are the advance guard for the real thing. Their merit is judged in the very act of reading one's mail." -- Roberta Smith, "Art Invitations As Small Scraps Of History," New York Times, May 16, 1993. Very Good. Light edge wear. Contents clean and unmarked.

"An Exhibition of Artists' Books and Multiples from the Permanent Collection of Art Metropole. LEARN TO READ ART is an exhibition of 287 published works by artists from the postwar period to the present. Although the contemporary artist's book emerged early in the twentieth century, it was not until the sixties that it came into its own as a medium ideally suited to the needs of Fluxus and Conceptual artists of the period thus our exhibition picks up this thread of history in the postwar years and follows it into that period of intense evolution which was the sixties and early seventies." ?- AA Bronson, General Idea, from introduction.
