The spine in seven gilt stamped compartments, six raised bands, with a red lettering piece in the second compartment from the top. The boards scuffed with corners soft. Well-done late 18th Century linen repairs to the spine, probably covering cracked boards, but the binding strong, not separating and easily read. Contained in a cloth clam shell box. The box with some wear to the edges. The volume measures 35.2 x 22 x 4.8 cm. Each leaf measures 344 x 213 mm. Many edges uncut.

In 'The Tatler' (1709-1711) ontwikkelde Richard Steele (1672-1729) met de onmisbare hulp van zijn vriend Joseph Addison (1672 - 1719) een nieuw literair genre: het spectatoriale essay. Zij slaagden erin een vorm te vinden om op een onderhoudende manier, zonder in prekerigheid te vervallen, allerlei morele kwesties met betrekking tot het gewone dagelijkse leven te behandelen. Na 'The Tatler', waaraan ook de satiricus Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) enkele bijdragen heeft geleverd, volgden 'The Spectator' (1711-1712) en 'The Guardian' (1713). De drie tijdschriften zijn talloze malen herdrukt en nagevolgd, zowel in Engeland als in de rest van Europa. Pieter le Clercq (Naarden 1687- Den Haag 1759) vertaalde de 'The Tatler' pas na de andere twee tijdschriften. In het vierde deel volgt na de laatste aflevering van 'De Snapper' de beroemde satire van Jonathan Swift op de astroloog John Partridge, de 'Bickerstaff Papers', hier vertaald als de 'Prognosticatie voor den jaare 1708 van Isaak Bickerstaff', en daarna Addisons blijspel 'De trommelslager; of het huisspook', een vertaling - weer van Le Clercq - van 'The drummer or the haunted house' (1716).
