[18] pages consisting of the title leaf and pages [11] through 26, with a textual illustration and 2 folding plates. There is some minor foxing to the last 2 leaves with light dampstaining to the lower right edge of the last leaf. The edges of the pages are slightly darkened. Very good. The essays include "Observations of Wentworth Greenhalgh, in a journey from Albany to ye Indians, westward, begun May 20th 1677, and ended July ye 14, following" as well as an "Enumeration of the Indian Tribes connected with the government of Canada; the warriors and armorial bearings of each nation. 1736" presumed to have been authored by Louis Thomas de Joncaire. Also included is the "Present State of the Northern Indians in the depart[ment] of Sir William Johnson Bart., comprehended under the Six Nations and Ottawa confederacies, etc., containing the names, numbers and scituation of each nation, with remarks. Nov. 18, 1763".The first of 2 folding plates illustrating these papers portray the animal petroglyphs which represent the tribes of the Tortoise, the Wolf, the Bear, and the Beaver. At the top right, a vignette depicting three warriors is followed by illustrations of the interactions between the tribes as represented by their respective petroglyphs. The second plate also depicts the petroglyph symbols representing The Deer Tribe, The Potato Tribe, The Great Plover Tribe, The Little Plover Tribe, and The Eagle Tribe.
