In den WarenkorbHardcover. Revised edition. xv, 291 pp, 12 tipped-in color plates by Arthur Rackham; octavo, pale blue cloth with gilt title and ornaments, tip edge gilt. Dent published another Rackham-illustrated edition of this title in 1900 in their "Temple Classics for Young People" series. That edition had 1 color plate and 11 monochrome plates and the book was in a smaller format. NB: Previous owner John Hopkins Janny (1913-1945) was a Commander on the USS Indianapolis when it was torpedoed in 1945 by a Japanese submarine. The ship sank in only 12 minutes and of the nearly 1200 crew members only 316 survived. Those rescued endured 4 days in the open ocean, most without life boats. The Indianapolis disaster remains the Navy's worst loss of life from a single ship in its history. Commander Janney was not among the survivors. RIP. A well read copy with moderate rubbing and faint stains to covers, child's ownership note to front fixed endpaper (Johns Hopkins Janney) and signature to back of half-title page, free endpapers darkened, short tear to frontispiece tissue guard.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Good. No Jacket. Pale green/grey coloured cloth bound, hardback book with gorgeous gilt decoration and titles on both the front board and spine. No dust jacket. This wonderful book is in good condition, normal wear, marks and tear apply consistent with use and age. Gilt edge at top of papers. Inside front board is the name inscription to "Leonard" set within an illustration by Arthur Rackham from "Leonard" dated 1909. The odd brown mark on endpapers and edge of papers only to be expected of a book that's over 115 years old. 291 pages all intact, good binding and all pages, text and stunning illustrations by Arthur Rackham, are in really good, clean, readable order. Tissue guard paper still intact on title page. NOTE: The publishers make no apology for a new edition of this "evergreen" book. They feel that the fine drawings of Mr. Arthur Rackham are a sufficient raison d'etre for their appearance in this new form. Most of the designs appeared as line drawings in an edition issued by the present publishers in 1899, but they have since been worked over, revised, and coloured by the artist, while some entirely new designs have been added. This edition is designed virginbus puerisque. J.M. Dent & Co. (tiny tear to the base of this page.) A super book that deserves to be preserved for future generations.

No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks, binding tight and solid. Regarded as the preeminent prose satirist in the English language, Jonathan Swift (16671745) intended this masterpiece, as he once wrote Alexander Pope, to "vex the world rather than divert it." Savagely ironic, it portrays man as foolish at best, and at worst, not much more than an ape. The direct and unadorned narrative describes four remarkable journies of ship's surgeon Lemuel Gulliver, among them, one to the land of Lilliput, where six-inch-high inhabitants bicker over trivialities; and another to Brobdingnag, a land where giants reduce man to insignificance. Written with disarming simplicity and careful attention to detail, this classic is diverse in its appeal: for children, it remains an enchanting fantasy. For adults, it is a witty parody of political life in Swift's time and a scathing send-up of manners and morals in 18th-century England. EB; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.
