Very strange as Galleon Press usually reprints original text as is this but the Galleon Title page and equivalent page in the rear (all pages folded once for sewing in) are Xerox copies and are att…ached by a glue seam on the previous page. I don't know if this is a binding error/correction or what happened. Supposedly limited to 300 copies (maybe they ran out of the title page). Anyhow, a fairly scarce book with a nice blue board binding. Originally a MA thesis for the Univ. of Wisconsin and printed in 1918 by the Illinois State Historical Society. 80pp., followed by unpaginated bibliography.

He served in the Department of History of Eastern Kentucky State College from 1926 until his retirement in 1953. He authored six major works and produced numerous articles. In retirement he devoted his energies to devoting himself to expanding and enhancing the Historical Museum at Eastern College. The Presidential pardon given to ex-Confederates was a special power exercised by Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson and was usually extended in cases where the person pardoned had served in the military above the rank of colonel, or a civilian who had exercised political power under the Confederate government. The power to pardon offenses to the Federal government was given to the chief executive in the United States Constitution under Article II. There were 12,652 pardons issued by June 5, 1866. Under Johnson, the number of pardons was issued in this order: Virginia, 2,070; Alabama, 1,361; Georgia 1,228; Mississippi, 765; South Carolina, 638; North Carolina, 482; Texas, 269; Louisiana, 142; Tennessee, 93; Arkansas, 41; West Virginia, 39; Florida, 22; Kentucky, 11; Missouri, 10. On January 9, 1867, President Johnson sent Congress a list of high level former Confederates for whom he had issued pardons.
