Rare. First Edition. Dust Jacket in Very Good Condition, Hard Cover Binding and Pages in As Fine Condition. Published in 1974, The Faith of Graffiti marked a turning point in how graffiti was perceived- shifting it from criminal act to cultural expression. The book combined the striking street photography of Jon Naar and Mervyn Kurlansky with a provocative essay by Norman Mailer, who argued that graffiti represented a new, rebellious form of urban art. At a time when such markings were dismissed as vandalism, the book insisted they were messages of identity, visibility, and resistance. Naar's photographs captured New York City's subways, buildings, and alleyways transformed by young graffiti writers. These vibrant, improvised visuals- tagged names, stylized letters, and layered scrawls- offered a raw portrait of the city's social and creative energy. Mailer's text placed these anonymous artists within a broader cultural context, comparing their work to calligraphy and likening their presence to political and existential acts. Half a century later, The Faith of Graffiti remains a foundational document in the history of street art. Its influence is visible in contemporary practices that challenge the boundaries between public and private space, and in the work of artists who, like those early writers, use the city itself as their canvas.

In den WarenkorbSoftcover. Zustand: VG+. First Edition. 4to. 96pp. Printed wraps as issued. Numerous colour plates. Text in English. The most scarce of the variants. This copy has had quite a hard life, there is a split at the bottom of the spine and the covers are worn to corners and edges. It's solid though and in no danger of deterioration. A classic, definitive look at the birth of graffiti as an art form, pairing the fascinating 1974 essay by Norman Mailerâ"National Book Award and two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Naked and the Dead and The Executionerâs Songâ"with the stunning, iconic photography of internationally acclaimed photographer Jon Naar. Super early and super good.

Soft cover. Zustand: Fair. 1st Edition. Color photographs of New York subway grafitti in the "DROP DEAD" 1970s. A document of the authors' 1972 visit to the city. Endpages feature tag-names of graffiti writers, and a few quotes talking about their work. With 8-page essay by Norman Mailer: "The Faith of Graffiti." Softcover. From the collection of late Berlin action artist, gallerist, urban ecology advocate, mural-art producer and sculptor Ben Wagin. Wear and tear are result of location in the artist's studio, where he often worked with sand, dirt and gold dust. Condition: Fair. Spine sun faded but binding tight and intact. Edges of both front and back cover slightly chipped and creased. Shelf wear on bottom. Water damage back/ bottom of the book left four pairs of pages stuck together in the back that have made some tiny white spots on the photos when separated; despite this no notable odor. Some welling on bottom near back, slight welling top and right corner as well. But overall a decent reading copy of this scarce book.

Leather bound. Zustand: Fine. The limited edition of The Faith of Graffiti, signed by Norman Mailer, Mervyn Kurlansky, and Jon Naar. (illustrator). Limited Edition. Quarto, [80pp], [16pp text]. Full brown leather, title stamped in gilt on the spine, stamped in blind on front cover. Stated "First Printing" on the copyright page. From a limited edition of 350 copies, this being number 272, signed by Norman Mailer, Mervyn Kurlansky, and Jon Naar. This work features 80 photographs by Jon Naar, with design work by Mervyn Kurlansky. "The Faith of Graffiti" examines New York City's graffiti movement as a legitimate and expressive art form rather than mere vandalism. Signed.
