Mass market paperback. Zustand: Good. [6], 506 pages. Illustrations. Appendix. Index. Some cover wear. Somewhat curved. This includes chapters on Franz Bake, Hermann Bix, Rudolf von Ribbentrop, Hans Bolter, Michael Wittmann, Albert Ernst. Franz Kurowski (November 17, 1923 May 28, 2011) was a German author who specialized in World War II topics. He is best known for producing the popular English-language series Panzer Aces and Infantry Aces. Kurowski's first publications appeared in the Nazi era; from 1958 until his death he worked as a freelance writer. He wrote 400 books under his own name and various pseudonyms. Kurowski wrote, among other things, for the weekly pulp war stories series Der Landser. Kurowski produced numerous accounts featuring the Wehrmacht and the Waffen-SS, providing laudatory and non-peer reviewed wartime chronicles of military units and highly decorated personnel. On September 1, 1939, Germany invaded Poland and ignited World War II with a revolutionary fighting force that would forever change the face of war. The key to blitzkrieg-"lightning war"-was large scale deployment of Panzers, German armored tanks. Aided by the tremendous air power of deadly screaming Stukas, Panzer battalions attacked swiftly, violently, smashing through enemy lines, destroying supplies and artillery positions, and shattering the enemy's will to resist. The sheer scale of rapid-fire victories amazed the world and elevated the tank soldiers to an almost mythical status. Panzer Aces chronicles the battles of six decorated officers who helped create the legend. Based on extensive research, these gripping narratives of D day at Normandy, the bloody campaigns in Italy, the ferocious combat at Kursk-the greatest armored battle in the history of war-and many others offer resounding evidence of how the armored tank, in German hands, became the twentieth century's single most important development in land fighting. First American Edition [stated]. Fourth printing [stated].

Project Mercury was America's entry into the manned spaceflight program. When the program began in 1958, the Soviet Union was far ahead of the US in the race for supremacy in space. With immense effort, and in record time, NASA, the newly created spaceflight organization, developed a space transport system with orbital capsule and booster rockets. They used it to send Alan Shepard on a first suborbital "jump" into space in May 1961, and in February 1962 to make John Glenn the first American astronaut to orbit the earth. Nevertheless, the Americans were beaten by the Soviets in the race to put the first man into space. Project Mercury was, however, the foundation for NASA's later success in the race to the moon. All Project Mercury missions are discussed, including details on all craft and the astronauts involved. Superb color, archival images, cutaways and plans are also included. Project Mercury was the first human spaceflight program of the United States, running from 1958 through 1963. An early highlight of the Space Race, its goal was to put a man into Earth orbit and return him safely, ideally before the Soviet Union. Taken over from the U.S. Air Force by the newly created civilian space agency NASA, it conducted 20 uncrewed developmental flights (some using animals), and six successful flights by astronauts. The program, which took its name from Roman mythology, cost $2.76 billion (adjusted for inflation). The astronauts were collectively known as the "Mercury Seven", and each spacecraft was given a name ending with a "7" by its pilot. The Space Race began with the 1957 launch of the Soviet satellite Sputnik 1. This came as a shock to the American public, and led to the creation of NASA to expedite existing U.S. space exploration efforts, and place most of them under civilian control. After the successful launch of the Explorer 1 satellite in 1958, crewed spaceflight became the next goal. The Soviet Union put the first human, cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, into a single orbit aboard Vostok 1 on April 12, 1961. Shortly after this, on May 5, the US launched its first astronaut, Alan Shepard, on a suborbital flight. Soviet Gherman Titov followed with a day-long orbital flight in August 1961. The US reached its orbital goal on February 20, 1962, when John Glenn made three orbits around the Earth. When Mercury ended in May 1963, both nations had sent six people into space, but the Soviets led the US in total time spent in space. The Mercury space capsule was produced by McDonnell Aircraft, and carried supplies of water, food and oxygen for about one day in a pressurized cabin. Mercury flights were launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, on launch vehicles modified from the Redstone and Atlas D missiles. The capsule was fitted with a launch escape rocket to carry it safely away from the launch vehicle in case of a failure. The flight was designed to be controlled from the ground via the Manned Space Flight Network, a system of tracking and communications stations; back-up controls were outfitted on board. Small retrorockets were used to bring the spacecraft out of its orbit, after which an ablative heat shield protected it from the heat of atmospheric reentry. Finally, a parachute slowed the craft for a water landing. Both astronaut and capsule were reco.

Eberhard Rodel is a specialist in the history of Russian spaceflight. He maintained good contacts in the Russian spaceflight scene. This concise history is the first book in a new series on the Soviet space program, and features many rare photographs, diagrams, and charts. When Soviet rocket experts examined the first Nazi V-2s in early 1945, they immediately realized that their own technology was years behind what the Germans had developed. The dropping of the two American atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945 made the path forward clear: the development of a Soviet atomic bomb, and a suitable missile to carry it. This story begins with the Soviet's pre- and early war developments in rocket technology, then covers the discovery and study of the V-2s at Peenemünde, Germany. The Soviets assembled remaining V-2 rockets from existing parts and their mode of operation was studied. Developments in the Soviet R and G series missiles in the early 1950s are discussed in detail, as is the development for the peaceful use of Soviet rocket technology in space. First volume in a new series on the Soviet space program Covers the crucial, and rarely known, early years of 1941-1953 Soviet R and G series missiles in the early 1950s discussed in detail 207 color and b/w photographs. Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. ix, [1], 261, [1] pages. Oversized book, measuring 12 inches by 9-1/4 inches. Profusely illustrated with black and white illustrations and maps. Includes Translator's Notes, Appendix A--The German Panzerlied; Appendix B--Specifications--The Panzer VI Tiger I and II; Appendic C--Specifications--The Tank Destroyers Elefant and Jagdtiger; Appendix D--The Knight's Cross Holder of the German Tiger Arm; Appendix E--German Terms and Abbreviations; Bibliography, Photo Contributors. The material which forms the basis of this history of the battles and the final downfall of the legendary Tiger tank has been accumulated by the authors piece by piece since the end of the Second World War. The war diaries of several battalions were available, as well as individual diaries, letters, and evaluations. This is a classic on the Tiger I and Tiger II formations of the German Army and Waffen-SS. Even though the English-language edition of "Tiger, The History of a Legendary Weapon" is over 30 years old, it is still one of the best books written on the most feared tank of the Second World War. It is full of firsthand accounts that cannot be found anywhere else. The book covers the development history of the Tiger and continues with its introduction to battle near Leningrad. All the Army and Waffen-SS Tiger formations and the major battles they fought in are covered, from sPz.Abt. 501 in North Africa, through the struggles on the Eastern Front, to the fighting in the West, in Italy and in Hungary and ending with the final battles in Germany. Also included are unit histories of the Jagdtiger and Sturmtiger formations. Numerous firsthand accounts of combat in the Tiger are included in the text which give the reader a vivid insight into the reality of fighting in these massive vehicles. The numerous excellent photographs of the vehicles and their crews complement the text. The Tiger I, a German heavy tank of World War II, operated from 1942 in Africa and Europe, usually in independent heavy tank battalions. Its late war designation was Panzerkampfwagen VI Tiger Ausf. E. The early war variant was designated Panzerkampfwagen VI Tiger Ausf. H1. Often, people refer to both of the variants as Tiger. The Tiger I gave the German Army its first armoured fighting vehicle that mounted the 8.8 cm KwK 36 gun (derived from the 8.8 cm Flak 36). 1,347 were built between August 1942 and August 1944. After August 1944, production of the Tiger I was phased out in favour of the Tiger II. While the Tiger I has been called an outstanding design for its time, it has also been called over-engineered, using expensive materials and labour-intensive production methods. The Tiger was prone to certain types of track failures and breakdowns, and was limited in range by its high fuel consumption. It was expensive to maintain, but generally mechanically reliable. It was difficult to transport, and vulnerable to immobilization when mud, ice, and snow froze between its overlapping and interleaved Schachtellaufwerk-pattern road wheels, often jamming them solid. This was a problem on the Eastern Front in the muddy rasputitsa season and during periods of extreme cold. The tank was given its nickname "Tiger" by Ferdinand Porsche, and the Roman numeral was added after the later Tiger II entered production. The initial designation was Panzerkampfwagen VI Ausführung H (literally 'Armored Combat Wagon/Vehicle VI version H', abbreviated PzKpfw VI Ausf. H) where 'H' denoted Henschel as the designer/manufacturer. It was classified with ordnance inventory designation Sd.Kfz. 182. The tank was later re-designated as PzKpfw VI Ausf. E in March 1943, with ordnance inventory designation Sd.Kfz. 181. Today, only seven Tiger I tanks survive in museums and private collections worldwide. As of 2020 Tiger 131 (captured during the North Africa Campaign) at the UK's Tank Museum is the only example restored to running order. The Tiger II is a German heavy tank of the Second World War. The final official Germa.
