Unbound. Zustand: Good. A one-page letter handwritten on both sides with recital press release, stamped envelope and two-page handwritten biography. Charlotte Andrew Johnson was an African-American woman adopted while still an infant by the Andrews family and provided all the privileges of an upper middle class life. She was protected from most of the racial barriers and discrimination of the times by her adopted parents and four sisters who provided her with private tutoring which included studies in foreign languages and classical music. Ms. Marion Hayden had been Charlotte's piano teacher, but relocated to Atlantic City, NJ. Hayden kept in touch with Johnson and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. A two-page handwritten biography of Charlotte Johnson by the late African American art historian and curator Carroll Greene is included. Greene was a neighbor and friend of Johnson's in the early 1970's. Greene was instrumental in revamping the Smithsonian's neglected African American collection during the Civil Rights era and this is an interesting example of a piece of African American history that he managed to save from obscurity. The letter shows some tearing at folds and the recital press release is creased at foredge with closed vertical tear down back page.
