Erstausgabe
Hardcover. 1st in English. x, [1], 202 p.; 22 cm. [Strangely, V.F.Blehl, John Henry Newman : a bibliographical catalogue, 1978, mentions no Jager material] This book presents 'for the first time in English, a substantial piece of Newman's controversial writings, which occupies a crucial position in his intellectual history.' (p. 1) -- Begun in French by Jager's premiere lettre in the daily L'Univers on 30 August 1834 and answered for two rounds by Benjamin Harrison (author of Tracts for the times no. 16 17 24 49); English summaries are given of Jager's prolix letters and Harrison's two replies. Newman's first letter (3me reponse), written in English (and printed here from his drafts) appeared, in a French version by his sisters, anonymously on 25 December and 28 and 29 January 1835; his 4me reponse, 1re partie appeared in Le moniteur de la religion, during December 1835 and February 1836; these Jager collected as Le protestantisme aux prises avec la doctrine catholique ., 1836. Newman never sent Part two: the rule of faith, surviving in a scribal hand and first printed here on p. [117]-44, along with his draft outline of the controversy and other letters, and a table of parallel passages between his second letter and the Prophetical office, of 1837 and 1877 -- While to Hurrell Froude he called Jager 'the most ignorant of men and the most inconsequent of reasoners. It is a great bore, yet. .it shows I am not a Papist.' (Letters and diaries V, 100), '. .Newman was driven to formulate views which ultimately became the nucleus of a course of sermons. .in 1836 then, in 1837, the Lectures on the Prophetical Office. In other words, the key text of the Via Media, and the main idea behind the Essay on Development, are directly derived from this controversy.' (p. 3) Good ex-lib. orig. green cloth. Text unmarked.
