Professor Shingleton received his Ph.D. in history from Florida State University. His dissertation is titled "Rural Life in the Old South: The British Travelers' Image, 1820-1860." His very first article, a commentary that appeared in the "Proceedings" of the American Philosophical Society--the first learned society in the US that was founded by Benjamin Franklin. The author's career spanned more than forty years. He was Dean of Men at Lees-McRae College; taught mostly U.S. history at Georgia State University, Oglethorpe University, and Darton College, now a branch of Albany State University in Albany, GA. Royce's research and writing, which was mostly carried on simultaneously with his teaching duties, consist of his three books and some fifty articles and book reviews, and are on topics dealing with the mid-nineteenth century American South. Dr. Shingleton has won many honors and awards, such as the Southeastern Writers Association Award for best non-fiction submission. He was active in professional activities such as making numerous speeches throughout the South, and was Chairman of the University System of Georgia Advisory Committee on History. He is listed in numerous biographical reference books such as "2000 Outstanding Scholars of the 20th Century," published by the International Biographical Centre, Cambridge, England. From Wikipedia: "John Taylor Wood (August 13, 1830 July 19, 1904) was an officer in the U. S. Navy. He resigned after the American Civil War started. He became a "leading Confederate naval hero". He was a Lieutenant serving aboard the CSS Virginia when it engaged the USS Monitor in 1862. After Virginia was destroyed, Wood assisted with the defense of Drewry's Bluff. Later, Wood led several successful raids against Federal ships and also served as naval aide to President Jefferson Davis. Promoted to Commander in May 1863, he simultaneously held the rank of Colonel in the cavalry. These dual ranks allowed him to play a liaison role between the South's army, navy and civil government. In August 1864, Wood commanded CSS Tallahassee, capturing an astonishing 33 Union ships during a ten day period. He was caught in 1865 in Georgia with Jefferson Davis' party, but escaped and made his way to Cuba. From there, he got to Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he settled." The scion of America's military and political leadership, John Taylor Wood was the grandson of Zachary Taylor and the nephew of Jefferson Davis. While his father and mother remained loyal to the Union, Wood himself resigned his commission at the U.S. Naval Academy and received a lieutenant's commission in the Confederate navy. If any human agency can assure success [of the mission] I think it will be accomplished by Col. Wood. Robert E. Lee.
