In den WarenkorbLondon : Robert Hardwicke, 192 Picadilly, 1867, kl.8°, VI, (2), 83, (1) pp., 3 Taf., 13 Fig., orig. Leinenband. First Edition of the "Handbook of the Sphygmograph : Being a Guide to its use in clinical research. To which is appended a Lecture delivered at the Royal College of Physicians on the 29th of March 1867 on the Mode and Duration of the Contraction of Heart in Health and Disease". "The first account of the use of the sphygmograph in England was published in The Lancet during 1865. It was part of a report of the proceedings of a meeting in London and mentions that Dr Francis E. Anstie was the first English physician to use the sphygmograph, which was described as 'an exquisitely designed instrument. of precision and remarkable beauty'. It goes on to say that Dr Burdon-Sanderson was also using the device (Anon. 1865). On 17 February 1866, another report appeared in the same journal (Walton 1866) in which abnormal pulse recordings taken with Marey's instrument from the right radial artery were compared with the normal tracings from the left radial artery. The differences between the sphygmograms were attributed to an aneurysm of the right axillary artery. This appears to have been the first report of the diagnostic use of the device in England. Later, in March 1866, the British Medical Journal published an extensive paper in two parts by Balthazar W. Foster of Birmingham. Foster later published a monograph describing the use of Marey's sphygmograph in England. The conclusion of Foster's monograph contains a brief but interesting exchange of letters between Foster and The Lancet over who really introduced the device to England. As we have noted, Anstie appears to have been the first to use the device, although Sir John Burdon Sanderson may also have been using it at the same time. Anstie himself subsequently published several articles on the sphygmograph and the correspondence appeared in The Lancet on 26 May and 9 June 1866. In 1867 J. B. BURDON-SANDERSON (1828-1905) published several reports on the sphygmograph and a monograph entitled 'Handbook of the Sphygmograph' (Burdon-Sanderson 1867)." N.H.
