In den WarenkorbFirst Edition. 8vo, pp. 136, orange cloth, original dust jacket. Near fine, doubly inscribed with cavalier New York associations. The best copy in the world. The boxer's third book of "interesting and instructive" bar-talk, inscribed by both Madden and cartoonist Hal Rasmusson to Merton Willmore, Cincinnati landscape painter. Madden's inscription reads: "To Cincininattis [sic] Mert, who is slumming with Aggies old man in my joint. Most Sincerely, Joe Madden." Rasmusson's inscription, under his original cartoon drawing of Aggie Mack, reads: "To Mert Willmore with love and kisses to a very swell guy, Sincerely, Aggie Mack and Hal Rasmusson. P.S.-Mert, I'll see you in Southern California," followed by a second drawing of Betty Boop with the balloon: "Listen Mert, Did you mean that last 'pass?'" Joe "The Markee" Madden, one-time professional lightweight, ran a West Side New York taproom called "My Pub," which served as both his livelihood and the setting for his books collecting the wisdom and nonsense overheard at the bar. Hal Rasmusson, creator of cartoon teenagers "Aggie Mack" and "Honey Bun," was apparently showing fellow artist Merton Willmore the town, and judging from the banter of these inscriptions, My Pub may have been their last stop. The publisher imprint is Madden's own joke about his third self-published venture into the literary marketplace. You should read this because it is the unfiltered voice of a New York bar at the tail end of the Depression, the kind of talk that nobody thought to preserve and almost nobody did. Signed. …
