Dopo secoli di trionfi e conquiste, l'Islam usciva sconfitto sul piano politico e militare. La Palestina era sotto mandato britannico. In questo contesto, nel 1921, Hag 'Amin al-Husayni venne nominato muftì di Gerusalemme e divenne il più importante leader islamico del Medio Oriente. Al-Husayni fu l'assoluto protagonista della nascita del moderno fondamentalismo islamico e della lotta armata ('intifadah) contro gli ebrei. Al-Husayni fu un visionario crudele che in nome del nazionalismo arabo e dell'antisemitismo strinse un'alleanza tattica con il nazismo in forza della quale 100.000 musulmani combatterono come volontari nelle divisioni tedesche. Dopo la guerra, scampato a Norimberga, al-Husaymsi si divise tra l'Egitto, dove rinsaldò i rapporti con Sayyid Qutb e Hasan al-Bannah, rispettivamente il teorico e il fondatore dei Fratelli musulmani, e Beirut, dove pose sotto la sua ala protettiva un giovane che diventerà un protagonista della politica mediorientale: Yasir 'Arafat.
