Volume One of a two volume set. 400pp. Full contemporary calf, gilt bands along the spine creating six compartments, volume number in gilt in the fourth compartment from the top, red leather label with the title in gilt in the second from the top, and top edge gray. Board and spine worn, a piece of tape on the spine, an abrasion on the rear board, front hinge cracked but remains largely sound, foxing to the preliminaries and terminals, and light offsetting throughout, very good. John Michael O'Connor's papers are held at the University of Michigan, the finding aid for the collection states, "John Michael O'Connor was born in 1790 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of Hugh and Margaret O'Connor (d. 1812). He entered the army as a first lieutenant in 1812, serving in the 3rd New York Artillery, and was cited for gallantry at the Battle of Chippawa in 1814, and brevetted major, assistant adjutant general, in the same year . In the postwar army, O'Connor translated Gay de Vernon's Treatise on the Science of War and Fortifications, which was used as a textbook at West Point beginning in 1818 and for many years afterward.".
