Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: g to g+. First edition. Folio (13 3/4" x 10 1/2"). 1276pp. Original blind-stamped leather with gold borders on front and rear cover, gold lettering on spine. Raised bands. All gilt edges. Marbled endpapers. Blue ribbon marker. Frontispiece; lithgraphic title-page; variant title-page, stating "London: James Sangster & Co., 36 Paternoster Row." This 1858 edition of the Family Bible was the first to include lengthy parallel passages, which suggest the appropriate meaning of the text. In general, the marginal references simply used to indicate the chapter and verse, here these important notes, "comparing spiritual things with spiritual," are quoted at length. The condensed comments by Matthew Henry and Thomas Scott constitute the principal value of this edition. Illustrated with 31 full-page tinted lithographed landscapes after drawings by David Roberts, 5 maps, 1 plan of ancient Jerusalem and its environs, as well as a family index. Index partly filled-in with handwritten list of names of the "George King" family with birth dates. Lithographed plates protected by tissue guards. Six-page section Alphabetical order of the proper names in the Old and New Testaments with the meaning of the words in the original languages and 28 pages Summary of Biblical Antiquities in rear (that section illustrated with some b/w in-text illustrations). Age wear, scuffing and some staining on binding. Tail of spine bumped and worn, wear to corners and parts of edges. Some fading and scratching on gilt edges. Hinges starting. Name and address of previous owner on blank leaf in front. 3" uneven tear on upper margin of Jericho plate, not affecting image. Sporadic foxing throughout, some pages creased. 5" closed tear on last five leaves (three text and two blank leaves). Binding in good, interior (besides torn leaves) in good+ condition. Complete with all maps and plates.
