Later edition. Octavo (18.5cm); brown cloth, stamped in blind with gilt on spine; yellow endpapers; 243+[12]pp, frontispiece. Spine lolled, backstrip and upper margins sunned; soiling and surface wear; extremities bumped and rubbed. Textblock damped and foxed throughout, with some soiling and slight pulling at the signatures. Overall Good. John Mather Austin, author of A Voice to the Married, presents these lectures in good conduct for young men and women, originally written "for the pulpit". Promotes the usual rigid parameters of acceptable behavior by which young people were expected to abide, though with the prevalence of such books in this era, one can only question their efficacy. With 12 additional pages of publisher's advertisements.

Fourth Edition. Small octavo (15cm); dark brown publisher's cloth, decoratively stamped in blind and gilt; xxiv,402pp. Spine somewhat cocked; boards rubbed in spots, with chapping to extremities and some mild material loss; textblock comprehensively foxed, with some leaves partially sprung and strings visible at signatures. Just about Very Good, complete. John Mather Austin was a prominent New York preacher who penned several books proffering advice for young people and (in the case of this book) newlyweds. Not surprisingly, the advice within is outdated and rigidly sexist by today's standards. However, one interesting tidbit to note is that this book was absolutely eviscerated in the June, 1841 issue of The Knickerbocker, when epistolary spat broke out between Austin and the magazine's editor (at the time, Lewis Gaylord Clark) after the latter mistook the former for the author of another (but no less egregious) book.

AUSTIN, John Mather. GOLDEN STEPS TO RESPECTABILITY, USEFULNESS, AND HAPPINESS BEING A SERIES OF LECTURES TO YOUTH OF BOTH SEXES; OR CHARACTERS, PRINCIPLES, ASSOCIATES, AMUSEMENTS, RELIGION, AND MARRIAGE. Auburn, [NY]: Derby, Miller, And Company, 1850. 12mo., embossed red cloth, gilt-tooled spine; 243 pages plus ads. First Edition. Lectures written for the pulpit, by a direct descendent of famous New England cleric Increase Mather. Austin's father, Benjamin Mather Austin, converted from Baptist to Universalism while John was in his teens and John became pastor in Auburn, New York in 1844. He eventually became editor of the weekly Universalist newspaper "Christian Ambassador" and was later appointed by Pres. Abraham Lincoln as Paymaster for the Union Army. After the Civil War, he moved back to Auburn, earning a living in secular occupations but he continued preaching part-time. Signed presentation from Austin, to his son, on the front endpaper: "Clement L. Austin, From his affectionate father, The Author. Auburn, Sept. 6, 1850." An amazing presentation from this important and early Universalist preacher to his son! Very Good (1/4-portion of a rear blank page has been clipped away & a very tiny paper label is tipped to the rear pastedown, reading "C.L. Austin, but tipped-in upside-down). Austin's autograph is uncommon! $350.00.
