The e ld of intelligent agents has become an important research area within these disciplines, and in the workshop as in the present volume the concept of agency is thus considered from a multi-disciplinaryperspective. The 10 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 14 submissions. This volume came out of a Dagstuhl seminar exploring the relationship - tween the original paradigm and the two new ones. Following the success of the seminar, the idea emerged to edit a volume with contributions from parti- pants including those who were invited but could not come. The participants reaction was very positive, and so we, the organizers of the seminar, felt - couraged to edit this volume. All submissions were properly refereed, resulting in the present selection of high-quality papers in between the topics of objects, agents and features. These workshops on 'Agent Theories, Architectures, and L- guages' have established themselves as a tradition, and play the role of small but internationally well-known conferences on the subject, where besides theory per se also integration of theory and practice is in focus. Speci cally, ATAL - dresses issues of theories of agency, software architectures for intelligent agents, methodologies and programming languages for realizing agents, and software tools for applying and evaluating agent-based systems. ATAL 2001 featured two special tracks in which both the more theoretical / formal and the more practical aspects were present, viz. 'Formal Theories of Negotiation', organized by Frank Dignum, and 'Agents for Hand-Held, Mobile, or Embedded Devices', organized by Tim Finin. There was also an extra session on RoboCup Rescue, organized and presented by Satoshi Tadokoro and Ranjit Nair. ATAL 2001 attracted 68 papers from over 20 countries all over the world, of which 30 were selected for presentation at the workshop and publication in this volume. These biennial DEON (more properly, EON) workshops are designed to promote international cooperation among scholars across disciplines who are interested in deontic logic and its use in computer science. They support research that links the formal-logical study of normative concepts and normative systems with computer science, arti cial intelligence, philosophy, organization theory, and law. Papers for these workshops might address such general themes as the dev- opment of formal systems of deontic logic and related areas of logic, such as logics of action and agency, or the formal analysis of all sorts of normative concepts, such as the notions of rule, role, regulation, authority, power, rights, respon- bility, etc. , or the formal representation of legal knowledge. They might also be more concerned with applications, such as the formal speci cation of systems for the management of bureaucratic processes in public or private administration, or the speci cation of database integrity constraints or computer security protocols, and more. In the second stage (1993-1996) a work package was introduced devoted to the topics Reasoning and Dynamics, covering both the topics of 'Dynamics of Rea soning', where reasoning is viewed as a process, and 'Reasoning about Dynamics', which must be understood as pertaining to how both designers of and agents within dynamic systems may reason about these systems. The present volume presents work done in this context. This work has an emphasis on modelling and formal techniques in the investigation of the topic 'Reasoning and Dynamics', but it is not mere theory that occupied us. Rather research was aimed at bridging the gap between theory and practice. Therefore also real-life applications of the modelling techniques were considered, and we hope this also shows in this volume, which is focused on the dynamics of reasoning processes. In order to give the book a broader perspective, we have invited a number of well-known researchers outside the project but working on similar topics to contribute as well.
