Vintage hand-tinted still photograph from the 1955 UK film. One of several British films given American distribution by Twentieth Century Fox. Forrest Tucker stars as an American soldier hired by a German millionaire (Marius Goring) to smuggle a Polish scientist out of East Germany and into England. Shot on location in Germany and England. 8 x 10 inches. Very Good plus, with an ink notation on the verso, tiny corner creases, and a faint pencil notation on the recto.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. (no dust jacket) [nice-looking copy, front endpaper neatly removed but no other significant wear, although there are small ink scribbles on the front pastedown and on pages 4 and 5 (why?), plus a one-time owner's single name written in pencil on the half-title page]. A "rollicking story of love, high finance and jealousy" (per a contemporary review), this novel traces the exploits of Ariel Adams, an orphan who's been brought up by her guardian "according to his own ideas," and has reached young adulthood having lived "under a code contrary to the established conventions of society." This results in her taking a peculiar moral stance, one that's not completely obscured by the peppy jacket blurb: "With more than the average advantages, attractive and endowed with a strange nature and philosophy, her exceptional tutoring enables her to practice her own conception of what is good and bad." (This is quoted from another copy; there is NO jacket on this book.) So while she's not exactly amoral, neither does she let the "established conventions of society" get in the way of her pursuit of happiness. (For example: at one point she establishes a fake identity for herself and forges a signature on a letter of recommendation, then muses to herself: "Why not? I have devised an excellent, perfectly simple and absolutely harmless way of getting a job.") She finally gets a good tongue-lashing, near the end of the book, from the poor schmuck who's been in love with her all along (which hasn't stopped her from doing him wrong), and who excoriates her as "nothing better than an abominable parasite -- just a clever, female extortionist! -- the master crook of them all." In the hands of a better writer, this might have been a more compelling saga, but unfortunately Mr. Goring (who, unsurprisingly, never seems to have written another book) had no facility at all for writing believable dialogue.

In den WarenkorbZustand: Very Good. This is a A4 carbon copy typescript of a transcription of two diaries, probably transcribed by a family member in the 1960s. Pages 1 Ð 75 is a transcription of the journal kept by John Goring from 1st January to 31st December 1859. The Gorings were a wealthy and long-established family based at Wiston House, near Steyning, West Sussex, but it is not entirely certain whether at the time the diarist lived at the house, or elsewhere in the county. The diary is a record of Goring's various business and social meetings with Sussex friends and relatives as well as others well outside the county. The diarist seemed to have had a good deal of time on his hands. There are many luncheons, much horse-riding, a lot of cricket, and quite a few excursions, sometimes to shoot grouse. The second section (pages 1 - 148) is a transcription of the diary kept by another Sussex individual, Elizabeth Alleyne, from January 1st 1836 to 1st September 1839. Travels around southern and western England and many reflections on her spiritual life. The Alleyne family had strong business connection with Barbados and there are interesting references to the sugar trade there. Pages 149 - 151 is a transcribed memorandum (mostly an inventory ) by A. O. Alleyne dated Florence, Feb 11th 1901. The item. Typescript is bound in a black 'Perry instantaneous binder ' (spring back binder'). First page of first section is inscribed in pencil 'Goring'. First page of second section is inscribed in pencil 'E. Alleyne's Diary belonging to J. Goring, Wiston'. There are no other clues as to the provenance of the typescript, although it may have been undertaken by Jane Goring or one of her co-researchers while working on Lives, Loves and Letters: the Goring Family of Wiston, 1743 Ð 1905. Very good.
