During that period many American librarians placed large orders from our catalogues but John Gordan did much more than that. He had a specialist's interest in certain authors such as Joseph Conrad, and an unusually wide knowledge of literature which encompassed many byways, and he stimulated interest in others such as myself by his always enthusiastic and enterprising approach . . . The original manuscript of T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land, Virginia Woolf's MS. diaries from New Year's day 1915 until March 1941, various Auden manuscripts and two thousand letters exchanged between Lady Gregory and W.B. Yeats are examples of the kind of literary treasure which can be found in the Berg Collection . . ." Gordan's landmarks here range from The Canterbury Tales to The Time Machine and Lord Jim.

It demonstrates that Justice Benjamin Robbins Curtis, a supporter of Daniel Webster and the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 presiding under a recess appointment, made two critical rulings against Morris that were at odds with existing precedents. Finally, the book contextualizes Morris's trial among the other trials for this rescue, the prosecutions for the attempt to rescue Anthony Burns, another fugitive slave, in 1854, and the Supreme Court's decision in Dred Scott in 1857.
