Ce volume comporte pages 49 à 142 la publication pré-originale de l'Essai sur l'entendement humain ("Essay Concerning Human Understanding") de John Locke, publié ici deux ans avant l'originale anglaise (Londres, Eliz. Holt, pour Thomas Basset, 1690) dans une traduction française de Jean Le Clerc faite à partir d'une version abrégée par Locke lui-même de son Essai. John Locke a par ailleurs commis dans ce même volume (pp. 436-450) une critique des "Philosophiae naturalis principia mathematica" d'Isaac Newton. Complet des feuillets d'errata pour le tome VII et le tome VIII. Reliure un peu frottée avec quelques pertes de cuir, le reste très frais si l'on excepte la main qui a transcrit à l'encre en chiffres arabes les chiffres romains de la page de titre.

A bookplate from the Baggrave library is affixed inside the front cover, and a brief note in blue pen is written in the corner of the first (blank) page. Binding is strong. Pages free of foreign markings. A good copy.

Heavily worn and rubbed with much of spine covering chipped away, rear cover reasonably well attached, chips and overall wear to first several and final page, names neatly written at upper corner of title page, overall wear and age-toning to pages with occasional foxing. Handwritten note from 1926 on business billhead from Welchville, Maine mounted inside rear cover, explaining that the book was the property of Rev. John Church Howland who preached at Carver, Massachusetts for 59 years - along with additional family history going back to the Mayflower. Additional private library bookplate of Geo.
