Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. First US Edition. THE DEFINITIVE BIOGRAPHY BY THE SCHOLAR WHO DEVOTED HIS CAREER TO COOK'S JOURNALS. J. C. Beaglehole's monumental biography of Captain James Cook, written after decades spent editing Cook's journals and studying the documenta…ry record of his voyages. Rather than treating Cook simply as an emblematic explorer, Beaglehole follows the development of the navigator, hydrographer, commander, and man-from his Yorkshire beginnings and North Sea apprenticeship through the Newfoundland surveys and the three great Pacific voyages. COOK THROUGH HIS OWN RECORDS. The narrative encompasses Tahiti, New Zealand, Australia, the Antarctic, the Pacific islands, the northwest coast of North America, and Cook's final voyage and death at Kealakekua Bay. Beaglehole combines Cook's journals with Admiralty records, correspondence, contemporary accounts, and the evidence of those who sailed with him, producing a detailed portrait of both the voyages and the personality behind them. A LIFETIME OF COOK SCHOLARSHIP. The biography was the culmination of Beaglehole's extensive work on Cook. His editions of the explorer's journals for the Hakluyt Society became fundamental scholarly resources, and The Life of Captain James Cook brought that documentary scholarship together as a continuous biographical narrative. Beaglehole died in 1971 before the book appeared; publication followed in 1974. PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: A SUBSTANTIAL ILLUSTRATED BIOGRAPHY. Dark blue cloth with gilt spine titles. xi, 760 pages, including bibliography and index. Illustrated with 51 illustrations, four in color, and five maps. The color frontispiece reproduces Nathaniel Dance's 1776 portrait of Cook; additional illustrations include portraits, contemporary drawings, maritime subjects, and images relating to Cook and his voyages. The color illustrations include Henry Roberts's watercolor of the Resolution. Octavo hardcover, approximately 9.25 inches tall. Original pictorial dust jacket with portrait medallion of Cook on the front panel and maritime illustration on the spine. Original publisher's price of $18.50 present on the jacket flap. CONDITION: Near Fine/Near Fine. The bindings are tight and square. Dark blue cloth remains clean with bright gilt spine titles. Text is clean with light, even age-toning and minimal shelf handling wear. The original dust jacket is present with the $18.50 publisher's price intact. Jacket shows light shelf and handling wear. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: THE SCHOLAR BEHIND THE VOYAGES. Beaglehole's importance to Cook scholarship extends well beyond this biography. His extensive editing of Cook's journals established a documentary foundation for modern study of the voyages, and contemporary bibliographical descriptions continue to characterize the Hakluyt Society edition as the definitive comprehensive edition of Cook's journals. MASTER OF THE PACIFIC. The Life of Captain James Cook is therefore particularly significant because its author approached Cook after years immersed in the explorer's surviving records. The biography follows Cook not merely through the celebrated Pacific voyages but through the earlier experiences that made them possible-his maritime apprenticeship, naval service, Newfoundland surveying, development as a hydrographer, and increasing command responsibilities. MAPPING THE PACIFIC WORLD. Cook's voyages fundamentally expanded European geographical and scientific knowledge of the Pacific. Beaglehole follows that achievement through New Zealand, the eastern coast of Australia, the search for a southern continent, the Antarctic waters, Polynesia, and the northwest coast of North America, while placing exploration alongside navigation, cartography, natural history, naval administration, and encounters between Europeans and Indigenous peoples. SUBJECTS: James Cook, J. C. Beaglehole, Pacific Ocean, Pacific Exploration, Voyages of Discovery, Maritime Exploration, New Zealand, Australia, Tahiti, Hawaii, Antarctic Exploration, Northwest Coast, Navigation, Hydrography, Cartography, Royal Navy, Endeavour, Resolution, Exploration, Maritime History, Biography, Travel and Exploration, Pacific Exploration, Naval History, Cartography.
