It was le Carré's final novel to be published before his death in 2020. The novel is set in 2018 and depicts the relationship between Nat (né Anatoly), a 47-year-old member of the British Secret Intelligence Service (MI6), and a young man (Ed) who he plays badminton with weekly. After their matches, Ed likes to rant about Brexit and the American president at the time, to which Nat quietly listens and tacitly agrees. Meanwhile, Nat is running an operation to monitor a Ukrainian oligarch living in London. Through this mission, one of Nat's agents reveals that Ed is a double agent working for Russia to undermine the European Union. Nat's MI6 colleagues begin to suspect Nat of abetting him and grill him. Through their questioning and Nat's continued investigation, Operation Jericho is revealed - a plan for the U.K. to use double agents to take down the E.U. for the U.S.'s benefit. ***In an extract from the novel published prior to publication, The Guardian describes how "Nat admits to serious reservations about the idea of England "as the mother of all democracies", describing the country as in freefall, with "a minority Tory cabinet of 10th-raters --- Labour no better. The sheer bloody lunacy of Brexit". Boris Johnson is described in the book as a "pig-ignorant foreign secretary". John le Carré's editor at Viking Books, Mary Mount, has said that "The thing about Le Carré is that he's always been as much at home in Europe as Britain. A man with his experience of the Cold War could not walk away from the divisions in Britain, and between Britain and Europe. After the referendum, there was no choice for him except to look at where we are now. It is incredibly prescient, and a very emotional book in terms of how connected he feels to the history of Britain and Europe. There's no looking away, he addresses the very current political crisis"'. First comes the imagining, then the search for the reality. Then back to the imagining, and to the desk where I'm sitting now." ***From his years serving in British Intelligence during the Cold War, to a career as a writer that took him from war-torn Cambodia to Beirut on the cusp of the 1982 Israeli invasion, to Russia before and after the collapse of the Berlin Wall, John le Carré has always written from the heart of modern times. Dustwrapper bright. ***508 pages. 242mm x 162mm. ***'"A Small Town in Germany" can be read as a political ghost story, a story in which the past is haunting the present. For in Adenauer's West Germany old Nazis still abound at every level of public life, their records allowed to gather dust in forgotten cabinets by the tacit agreement of NATO partners determined to put the past behind them. The ghost in the case is the former refugee Leo Harting, a junior something and general fixer at the British Embassy, who has disappeared with forty-three files, all Confidential or above. His exorcist is Alan Turner, the driven, unhappy investigator sent out from London to find the man and the files before the Germans do. The result is a bleak but faithful sidelight on the balance of power in the early 1960s, when John le Carré was himself a Second Secretary in Bonn. It is also a compelling and tense piece of storytelling.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***'"A Small Town in Germany" is set in Bonn, the "small town" of the title, against a background of concern that former Nazis were returning to positions of power in West Germany. It is notable for being le Carré's first novel not to feature his recurring protagonist George Smiley or "The Circus," le Carré's fictionalised version of MI6. The novel is set in the late 1960s, in Bonn, the capital of West Germany. Great Britain is hoping to gain support from the West German government in a bid to enter the European Common Market. From London, Alan Turner, an official from the British Foreign Office, arrives to investigate the disappearance of Leo Harting, a minor British Embassy officer; moreover, secret files have disappeared with him. The embassy's head of Chancery, Rawley Bradfield, is hostile to Turner's investigation. Despite that, he is dinner party host to Turner and Ludwig Siebkron, head of the German Interior Ministry; the latter is close to industrialist Klaus Karfeld, who is successfully building a new nationalist political movement which is anti-British and anti-Western European, and which seeks to turn West Germany away from Western Europe and bring it closer to Communist Eastern Europe. Great Britain's diplomatic mission perceives growing support for Karfeld's movement as a threat to obtaining support for Britain's entry into the Common Market.' (Wiki) ***First impression of the Lamplighter Edition, in the original dustwrapper, in bright crisp condition. This Lamplighter Edition in hardcover is surprisingly uncommon. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
