Leather on the spine and hinges is flaking. Dark brown leather label with gilt stamped title. No cracks in the hinges or gutters, and the leaves are bound securely. Text block condition: decorated with red speckled edges. All pamphlets have browning and foxing to various degrees, but none overwhelmingly so. Some inscriptions, including a hand written table of contents. Pamphlets have been trimmed to size (with two exceptions) but there has been no loss of text. Henry Ingersoll Bowditch (1808-1892) was an American physician and a prominent Christian abolitionist. He made significant contributions to the fields of science and public health. He introduced inductive reasoning into American medical science, popularized the stethoscope, contributed to the understanding of tuberculosis, and laid the groundwork for public health by chairing the Massachusetts State Board of Health.
