In den WarenkorbLeather. Zustand: Very Good. None (illustrator). A very smart copy of this scarce early nineteenth century edition of this collection of sixteenth century poetry about the downfall of eminent figures. Only one-hundred and fifty copies of this scarce edition were produced. This collaborative anthology of Tudor era poetry was first published in 1559, with additional poems included in a number of subsequent editions until 1610.Many contemporary dramatists including Shakespeare were inspired by the manner in which the poems drew lessons from the failings and tragedies of historical figures, and the mixture of historical narrative with a focus on the individual. The fates of individuals including Richard, Duke of York, James I of Scotland, Richard III and Cardinal Wolsey are presented as poems. Two volumes bound in three: volume I presenting volume I; volume II presenting volume II part I, and volume III presenting volume II part II.With a small number of vignette illustrations and headpieces. With the bookplate of the Crawford Library - the 'Bibliotheca Lindesiana' - to the front pastedowns. This was a library of early books about philately formed between 1898 and 1913 by James Lindsay, 26th Earl of Crawford. The morocco bookplate of W.A. Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey also appears to each front pastedown. With the arms of the Scottish Kinnear Family tooled in gilt to each board. An attractive example of this scarce work. Rebacked, in full calf bindings with original boards laid down. Blind tooling and gilt detailing to boards. Rubbing to fore edges of boards, otherwise externally excellent. Hinges strained, but firmly held. Bookplates to front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright, with only the odd spot. Very Good. book.
