A 4-page letter by the widely-travelled German painter Rugendas, famous for his sumptuously illustrated book Voyage pittoresque dans le Brésil, which was the fruit of his travels in Brazil (1821-1825). Inspired by Von Humboldt, he sailed again for South America in 1831, travelling through Mexico, Argentina, Uruguay, Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil. In 1846 he departed for Europe, spending his last years in Munich and Weilheim an der Teck. The King of Bavaria purchased his sketches in exchange for a life annuity of 1200 florins per year. Apparently, Rugendas was still in need of money, since he writes in the present letter that he wants to travel to Prussia to ask the King for a salary "von dem es sich's gut hier leben ließ - ungefähr wie Humboldt in Paris lebte .". He further mentions the preparation of a "Künstlerball", for which the conductor and opera director Karl Perfall had composed the music. Rugendas refers to the famous "Künsterlfeste", theme parties that took place every year during carnival.The letter may have been addressed to Rugendas's friend Carl Albert Regnet, a District Officer in Munich. This is at least suggested by the added document, which is signed by Regnet and which opens with the remark "Zum Briefe meines lieben unvergeßlichen Freundes Moritz Rugendas möchten ein Paar Zeile am Platze sein", followed by details on Rugendas's life and works. Regnet would later honour Rugendas with an extensive entry in his 2-volume biographical dictionary Münchener Künstlerbilder (1871).In very good condition.l Cf. The young artist Rugendas was invited to join an expedition to the interior of Brazil by the Russian Consul General Baron Langsdorff in 1821. Jones is considered America's most famous naval hero of the Revolution, and the British reviled him as a pirate because of his raids along the Irish coast and his bold attack on the British port of Whitehaven. O autor retrata a condição desumana a bordo dos navios negreiros, o modo como os escravos eram desembarcados e registrados pelas autoridades, o interior do mercado de escravos no Rio de Janeiro, o transporte de escravos para as plantações, as cabanas de escravos ao lado da casa senhorial, o processamento da produção de mandioca, a colheita de escravos do café, a carga por escravos da cana-de-açúcar para um moinho impulsionado por um fluxo de água, e uma terrível gravura final de uma família escrava sendo punida pelo dono. Johann Moritz Rugendas nasceu em Augsburg, 1802, e faleceu em Weilheim am der Teck, Württernberg, em 1858. Era oriundo de uma família de pintores e, provavelmente, encontrava-se bem estabelecido quando foi recrutado pelo Barão Langsdorff para fazer parte da expedição ao Brasil. Uma vez no Rio de Janeiro, dissociou-se de Langsdorff e seguiu viagem por conta própria. É desconhecido o exato itinerário de Rugendas através do Brasil, mas sabe-se que visitou os principais estados do Norte e do Sul e esteve por certo tempo em Minas Gerais. Retornou à Europa em 1825 e viveu em Paris, em Roma e no sul da Itália. Em 1831 deu início a uma viagem ao México, Califórnia, Peru, Bolívia, Chile, e Rio da Prata, e no seu retorno permanecerá ainda por quase um ano no Rio de Janeiro. Em 1847 vivia em Württemberg, Weilheim, onde faleceu em 1858. Rugendas publicou muitos dos seus desenhos do México na obra de C. Sartorius. Dos vários lugares em que esteve deixou uma vasta coleção de desenhos e numerosas pinturas a óleo, retratos, etc., que se encontram dispersos em museus e coleções particulares. Em 1928, o pintor brasileiro W. Rodrigues adquiriu, do Museu da Bavária, um conjunto de cerca de cem desenhos do artista, que vendeu a colecionadores do Brasil e da Argentina. A obra Voyage pittoresque dans le Brésil foi publicada em 1835, quando Rugendas se encontrava ausente da Europa. Uma seleção de cem desenhos, na maioria desenhados ao vivo, foram litografados pela famosa imprensa de Engelmann. Parece que esse impressor não teve particular cuidado com os títulos exactos dos desenhos originais. Alfredo de Carvalho observou que a prancha 30 da Seção I (Vista de Olinda) e a prancha 20 da Seção 3 (Missa na Igreja da Candelária em Pernambuco) não correspondem aos títulos indicados. É provável que existam ainda outros erros desse tipo. Foram publicadas duas edições da obra, uma com texto em francês e a outra em alemão, ambas surgidas em 1835. O texto não é do próprio Rugendas, tendo sido escrito por V.A. Huber e outros a partir das cartas e notas do artista. A versão em francês é de Colbery. Não se trata de um texto desprovido de valor, a despeito da impregnação romântica de muitas de suas páginas, sem nexo com o assunto principal, não alcançando o mesmo padrão de autêntico valor documental das pranchas, que são da maior importância para o estudo da vida brasileira no princípio do século XIX. A obra saiu em vinte fascículos ao preço de 240 francos. Uma tiragem em papel China (para as pranchas apenas) era vendida a 300 francos. Pouco depois da publicação, os preços começaram a cair e um grande número de exemplares permaneceu encalhado. Antes da Primeira Guerra Mundial o livreiro Chadenat, de Paris, marcava 150 francos apenas no exemplar da tiragem especial em papel China, encadernado em meio marroquim. Um exemplar em papel comum custava 100 francos. Foi apenas recentemente, após a Segunda Guerra Mundial, que a obra de Rugendas tornou-se valiosa e os preços têm desde então subido consideravelmente. Imagem idêntica reproduzida na obra Voyage Pittoresque au Brèsil publicada em 1836. «Johann Moritz Rugendas nasceu em Augsburg em 1802 e faleceu em Weilheim am der Teck, Württernberg, em 1858. Era oriundo de uma família de pintores e, provavelmente, encontrava-se bem estabelecido quando foi recrutado pelo Barão Langsdorff para fazer parte da expedição ao Brasil. Uma vez no Rio de Janeiro, dissociou-se de Langsdorff e seguiu viagem por conta própria. É desconhecido o exato itinerário de Rugendas através do Brasil, mas sabe-se que visitou os principais estados do Norte e do Sul e esteve por certo tempo em Minas Gerais. Retornou à Europa em 1825 e viveu em Paris, em Roma e no sul da Itália. Em 1831 deu início a uma viagem ao México, Califórnia, Peru, Bolívia, Chile, e Rio da Prata, e no seu retorno permanecerá ainda por quase um ano no Rio de Janeiro. Em 1847 vivia em Württemberg, Weilheim, onde faleceu em 1858. Rugendas publicou muitos dos seus desenhos do México na obra de C. Sartorius. Dos vários lugares em que esteve deixou uma vasta coleção de desenhos e numerosas pinturas a óleo, retratos, etc., que se encontram dispersos em museus e coleções particulares. Em 1928, o pintor brasileiro W. Rodrigues adquiriu, do Museu da Bavária, um conjunto de cerca de cem desenhos do artista, que vendeu a colecionadores do Brasil e da Argentina. A obra Voyage pittoresque dans le Brésil foi publicada em 1835, quando Rugendas se encontrava ausente da Europa. Uma seleção de cem desenhos, na maioria desenhados ao vivo, foram litografados pela famosa imprensa de Engelmann. Identical image reproduced in the work "Voyage Pittoresque au Brèsil" published in 1836. « Maurice Rugendas was born in Augsburg in 1802 and died in Weilheim am der Teck, in Würtenberg in 1858. He came from a family of painters and was probably well established when he was recruited by Baron Langsdorff to join an expedition travelling to Brazil. He parted company with Langsdorff in Rio de Janeiro and set out on his travels by himself. The itinerary of Rugendas travels in Brazil is unknown but we know from his drawings that he visited the main states, from north to south, and stayed in Minas Geraes. He returned to Europe in 1825 and lived in Paris, Rome and the South of Italy. In 1831 he began another voyage to Mexico, California, Peru, Bolivia, Chile and the Rio de la Plata. On his return journey he stayed in Rio de Janeiro for almost a year. He was living in Württemberg, at Weilheim, in 1847 and died there in 1858. Rugendas published many drawings of Mexico in the work of Sartorius. He left a vast collection of drawings and numerous oil paintings, portraits, etc., of the many places in which he stayed. They were scattered in museums and private collections. In 1928 the Brazilian painter, W. Rodrigues, bought a collection of around hundred drawings from the Bavarian Museum and sold them to collectors of Brazil and Argentina. The Voyage pittoresque dans le Brésil was published in 1835 while Rugendas was not in Europe. A selection of a hundred drawings from the numerous ones made on the spot were lithographed by the famous press of Engelmann. He apparently did not take particular care in writing the exact title of the original drawings. Alfredo de Carvalho noted that plate 30 from Section 1 (View of Olinda) and plate 29 from Section 3 (Mass at Candelaria Church at Pernambuco) do not depict the places indicated in the title. Probably other mistakes exist in the location of other places. Two editions of the work were published, one in French and another in German, both in 1835. The text is not by Rugendas himself, however, but was written by V. A. Huber and others from the artist's letters and notes. The French text is a translation made by Colbery. This is not without value despite the romantic outpouring in many pages which has nothing to do with the main subject, but it does not reach the standard of the genuine documentary value of the plates, which are of utmost importance for the study of the Brazilian life at the beginning of the nineteenth century [.] ».
