September 2001, fühlte sich der weltbekannte Fotograf Joel Meyerowitz verpflichtet, den Ort der Zerstörung zu besuchen. Wie er selbst sagte, war er von einem "tiefen Impuls ergriffen zu helfen, zu bewahren und zu trösten". Am Zielort schließlich angekommen, wurde er jedoch von einem Polizeibeamten zurückgewiesen, nachdem er seine Kamera hob, um zu fotografieren, da es sich hierbei um einen Tatort handele und das Fotografieren deshalb nicht erlaubt sei. So verließ er den Ort wieder, erkannte jedoch das Dilemma, dass "keine Fotos, keine Geschichte" bedeuteten. So beschloss er einen Weg zu finden und schloss sich mit Feuerwehrmännern, Polizisten und Bauarbeitern zusammen, die am Tatort arbeiteten. Mit ihrer Hilfe wurde er zum einzigen Fotografen, dem Zugang zu Ground Zero gewährt wurde. Schließlich begann Meyerowitz die Aufräumarbeiten am Ort, wo das World Trade Center in sich zusammen fiel systematisch zu dokumentieren. Kurze Zeit später engagierte das Museum of the City of New York Meyerowitz offiziell dazu ein Foto-Archiv über die Zerstörung und den Wiederaufbau des am Ground Zero anzufertigen.
