Rare 8th edition, Inocêncio does not mention, and is not registered in the main booksellers' and auctions' catalogues. The 1st edition was published anonymously in 1806, the 2nd edition was published in Rio de Janeiro in 1812, the 3rd edition in 1813, the 4th edition in 1814, the 5th edition in 1815, the 6th in 1817 and the 7th edition in 1826. The present edition is mentioned as the 5th edition because it does not include the Rio de Janeiro edition of 1812 and the Lisbon editions of 1814 and 1826. It is one of the most popular Portuguese plays and has been constantly reprinted up to the present day. Tragedy in verse about the celebrated story of Inês de Castro, it was much admired by Garrett. Written in 1798, it won a prize from the Academy of Sciences in May 1799. The Portuguese National Library has the manuscript presented to the Academy.
