Le terme "taupin" serait une allusion au travail souterrain de la larve car au XVe siècle, les taupins étaient les mineurs qui avaient pour rôle de saper les murs des villes que l'on assiégeait. En Angleterre notre taupin est connu sous le nom de "click beetles" qui fait référence au bruit que fait l'animal lorsque, retourné sur le dos, il se détend brusquement avec un "clic" audible. In England our wireworm is known as "click beetles" which refers to the noise the animal makes when, turned on its back, it suddenly relaxes with an audible "click".
