Fascinados con la lectura, los letrados hicieron circular diferentes capítulos manuscritos de la novela hasta su primera edición en 1617. Por supuesto, ningún autor quiso ver su nombre asociado a una novela tan erótica, satírica y descarnada, de modo que sólo conocemos el singular pseudónimo de quien la compuso: el Erudito de las Carcajadas de Lanling. Compuesta por 100 capítulos, la historia continúa en este segundo volumen relatando las vicisitudes de Ximen Qing, sus esposas y demás personajes que lo rodean. Su irrefrenable ascenso social lo lleva ante la presencia del Emperador, pero sus triunfos políticos se ven ensombrecidos por los trágicos acontecimientos que se suceden en su residencia. De nuevo asistimos a un desaforado despliegue de lujo, corrupción, sexo, traiciones y violencia cuyas inevitables consecuencias se ciernen sobre las vidas de los protagonistas de la novela.
