Mai 736 verstarb die adelige Dame Li Chui im Alter von 25 Jahren, so berichtet es die Inschrift des Epitaphs aus ihrem Grab. Sie wurde außerhalb der Tangzeitlichen Hauptstadt Chang'an, dem heutigen Xi'an, mit zahlreichen kostbaren Beigaben in einem Erdkammergrab bestattet. Durch einen glücklichen und seltenen Umstand blieb ihr Grab im Laufe der Jahrhunderte unberaubt. Eine ungewöhnlich reiche und filigrane Schmuckausstattung wurde während der Ausgrabung im Jahr 2001 mitsamt dem Skelett der Toten von einem chinesischen Archäologen-Team vorausschauend in zwei Blockbergungen gehoben und ins archäologische Labor in Xi'an gebracht. Dort arbeiteten Spezialistinnen und Spezialisten eines deutsch-chinesischen Kooperationsprojektes gemeinsam an der Freilegung, Dokumentation und Präsentation der Funde und Befunde. Erstmals konnte eine derart vielteilige und feine Schmuckausstattung in ihrem archäologischen Kontext ausgewertet und rekonstruiert werden. Das Ergebnis ist von beeindruckender Einzigartigkeit. In der vorliegenden Publikation widmet sich ein interdisziplinäres Team der vielschichtigen Untersuchung des Grabes.
