Being a designer, Huang seems confronting "simulacra" in his everyday life. "Simulacra" is a word originated from Jean Baudrillard's "Simulacra and Simulation" discussing symbols, signs and their relationship to contemporaneity. The author referred to a fable by Jorge Luis Borges as "the finest allegory of simulation". In this tale, the cartographers of an Empire draw up a map which was so detailed that it covered exactly the territory of the Empire. And with the decline of the Empire, all that was left were the shreds of the map. Baudrillard used this tale with "metaphysical beauty" to describe the situation of contemporary life, and he puts it this way: "Abstraction today is no longer that of the map, the double, the mirror or the concept. Simulation is no longer that of a territory, a referential being or a substance. It is the generation by models of a real without origin or reality: a hyperreal." Apparently, simulacrum a reality constructed by certain ideas, symbols or icons. Despite the fact that digital and virtual reality technology was far less developed when "Simulacra and Simulation" was written, and that Baudrillard's discussion was not in any wise targeting the features of today's digital age, his ideas were so filled with insight and thought-provoking. The works in this display are right based on such consideration. Six pieces of creations will be present in this exhibition in Berlin, among which three are selected from the 2014 Field: Huang Jiancheng Design Tour Exhibition and the other are latest works created for this show.
