Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good dj. Fireside BCE. [minor shelfwear, mild age-toning to fore-edge, Hollywood agency stamp on front pastedown and endpaper; the jacket is browned along the spine and at the edges, with a short tear at the lower front flap-fold, and the Hollywood agency stamp on the front flap]. (B&W photographs) The book and lyrics (but not the music) for the Broadway musical about Fiorello LaGuardia, the popular New York City mayor who served from 1934 to 1945. The musical was popular, too: it ran for two seasons (November 1959-October 1961; 795 performances), and did very well in the major theatre awards, winning three Tony Awards (including Best Musical, shared with "The Sound of Music," and Best Featured Actor for star Tom Bosley), the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Musical. And yet it's never made it into the canon of "great Broadway musicals," and none of its songs has ever become a standard.
