[v], 169pp. and "96 or 97" full-page and in-text illustrations by Kenneth M. Skeaping (1856-1946), an English lithographer, portrait painter and illustrator. The text and illustrations are printed in blue on lighter blue paper. Jerome Klapka Jerome (1859-1927) was a popular novelist and playwright, best known as the author of 'Three Men in a Boat'. 'Told After Supper' is a Christmas-themed collection of ghost stories, connected by a framing device in which the unnamed narrator attends a Christmas Eve dinner party at his uncle's house. Once the scene is set in the cozy atmosphere of the Christmas gathering, the characters - friends and relatives - take turns narrating their own ghostly tales. Each story presents a blend of humor and pathos, showcasing eccentric ghosts and their often comical interactions with the living. The book is bound in contemporary or slightly later half leather over dark green cloth covered boards with gold titling on a leather label and five thin raised bands on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and light soiling to the boards and some damp marking to the cloth on about 2" of the top half of the rear board. The leather on the corners and spine edges has some scuffing with lifting to the top layer of the leather in places. There is a little loss to the leather on the tip of the bottom front corner. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription.

From the Introduction: "All these things happen on Christmas Eve, they are all told of on Christmas Eve. For ghost stories to be told on any other evening than the evening of the twenty-fourth of December would be impossible in English society as at present regulated. Therefore, in introducing the sad but authentic ghost stories that follow hereafter, I feel that it is unnecessary to inform the student of Anglo-Saxon literature that the date on which they were told and on which the incidents took place was--Christmas Eve." "Told After Supper is an anthology of short humorous ghost stories by the British author Jerome K. Jerome (1859-1927). . The stories are connected by a framing device in which the unnamed narrator attends a Christmas Eve dinner party at his uncle's house. After having eaten and drunk a large amount of alcohol, the guests, as was normal on Christmas Eve in Victorian Britain, tell ghost stories to each other. The narrator does not include all of the stories that are told that evening in the anthology. He has to leave two of them out because he does not understand them. The last story in the anthology is the narrator's own story of the ghostly experience that he has on that Christmas Eve, which ends with him making a public disgrace of himself." (from Fandom).

First Edition. First impression. Octavo (19.5cm). Publisher's red cloth, decoratively titled in black on spine and front cover; top edge gilt, fore and bottom edges uncut; 169pp; 14pp ads; with "96 or 97 [text] illustrations by Kenneth M. Skeaping." First edition statement and price of 3/6 on front cover. Text printed in blue on blue-tinted paper. Mild offsetting to free endpapers, else a very nice copy, tight and square with just a few inobtrusive spots of soil to covers; Very Good or better. Handsome copy of this rather elaborate late-Victorian oddity, a collection of humorous ghost stories, printed on blue paper and with lively decorations by the portraitist and illustrator Kenneth Mathiason Skeaping, intended as a parody of the then-current vogue for supernatural tales. A delightful and rather fragile book, seldom found in such nice condition.
