Neuware - Alonso Berruguete (h. 1489-1561), primer escultor del Renacimiento español, realizó de joven una fructífera estancia en Italia, donde convivió con Miguel Ángel, Rafael o Bramante y se contagió de su euforia por los ideales antiguos y de su manera de ver el arte. Sarcófagos, ruinas y estatuas…encendieron su fantasía, en especial el Laocoonte, exhumado poco antes de su llegada: su patetismo teatral, su virtuosismo anatómico y la danza de los cuerpos en el espacio marcaron de manera indeleble su obra. En 1518 volvió a Castilla con la imaginación llena de ninfas, seres grotescos y tragedias clásicas. Se sentía un renacentista, un artista 'nuevo', dispuesto a desafiar a las viejas autoridades y defender su ingenium. Con este bagaje alumbró una obra llena de emoción y vehemencia visual. Sus retablos, sepulcros y esculturas delatan una obsesiva preferencia por la vena sombría y 'nocturna' del Renacimiento: no la apolínea, sino la dionisíaca, la del gesto tormentoso y desmedido, la de la fiebre expresiva y la terribilità que padecen los 'hijos del Laocoonte'. Aquí radica la 'palpitación' moderna de Berruguete, en su clasicismo anticlásico, en la primacía dada a la libertad rítmica y al desgarro, a una subjetividad extrema en la que la fuerza de lo antiguo se alía con la frescura de lo moderno. La primera sección del catálogo está dedicada a cuestiones contextuales, como el acercamiento a la Antigüedad en el arte italiano del siglo XVI; la erudición arqueológica y el desarrollo de la escultura en la Roma que conoció Berruguete; el coleccionismo de antigüedades en el Renacimiento hispano; o el estado del conocimiento del mundo clásico en la España de 1500. La segunda sección se centra en la huella del Laocoonte en Berruguete, la estela de los sarcófagos en sus representaciones pasionales, el repertorio de gestos y fórmulas expresivas tomados de la Antigüedad, así como su faceta de arquitecto y su idea del arte moderno, basada en la primacía del dibujo.
