Soft cover. Zustand: Good. Original colour illustrated staple-bound wraps 21x28cm. Printed by Saudi Arabian Airlines Press. 3pp Arabic text, (9)pp colour photos some captioned in English and Arabic, plus a double-page "Listed Buildings and Conservation Area" plan to the inner wraps captioned in English and Arabic. Good only, lightly creased with short closed tears, marks and small tape repairs to the wraps, and Arabic annotations penciled to p3. With support from the national airline, this was prepared to inform on efforts to preserve and improve Old Jeddah. It is undated, but appears to relate to the unnamed Conservation Master Plan designed by RMJM (1970), which proposed designating the historic city a national heritage zone, and classifying buildings by significance with new building regulations. The text opens with a brief history of the City and its houses (styles, materials, examples). It then describes how a Secretariat commissioned international experts to prepare studies to guide the process. The first stage involved identifying 1,000 historic buildings, arranged into 3 classes (national, regional, or local significance), 9 types (traditional town houses, large houses and palaces, caravanserais, mosques, minarets, courtyards, public buildings, villas, warehouses), and 3 sizes (small, medium, large). The second stage established 3 areas (Waterfront, Central Commercial, Old Area). Considerations included reviving old trades in vacant properties, addressing how spaces are being used, parking, service roads, avoiding demolishing existing buildings, avoiding building new roads, pedestrian access, chairs and sunshades, utilities and facilities for residents, etc. The plan shows the conservation areas on a scale of approx 1cm to 50 metres, graded A-C, with colour shading to distinguish buildings of national, regional or local importance. The photos show Bab Jadid (front cover), the Nassif, Noorwalli and Sharbatly Houses, the Municipal Building, other unnamed houses and streets in very good states of repair. Saudia's involvement is not explained, but probably relates to the tourism angle, as well as the fact it was a Jeddah-based company.

Engraved map. 1230 x 690 mm. Detailed British Admiralty chart of the approaches to Jeddah, present-day Saudi Arabia, with an inset chart of Jeddah Harbour and the city itself. - This is undoubtedly one of the better antiquarian maps of the gateway city to Mecca and Medina. Jeddah was an important diplomatic city when the map was made; illustrated are the consulates of Britain, Russia, Austria, the Netherlands, Egypt, and France. Numerous minarets of the old city are shown. The old city walls and the gates of Mecca, Cherif, and Medina are labeled. The Ummina Howwa (Eve's Tomb) is shown. - At the beginning of the 20th century, Jeddah was an important Red Sea port, but with many islands and much shoaling in the approaches, it was a dangerous one. The British Admiralty has produced nautical charts since 1795 under the auspices of the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (HO). Its main task was to provide the Royal Navy with navigational products and service, but since 1821 it has also sold charts to the public. In 1795, King George III appointed Alexander Dalrymple, a pedantic geographer, to consolidate, catalogue, and improve the Royal Navy's charts. He produced the first chart as the Hydrographer to the Admiralty in 1802. Dalrymple, known for his sticky personality, served until his death in 1808, when he was succeeded by Captain Thomas Hurd. The HO has been run by naval officers ever since. Hurd professionalized the office and increased its efficiency. He was succeeded by the Arctic explorer Captain William Parry in 1823. By 1825, the HO was offering over 700 charts and views for sale. Under Parry, the HO also began to participate in exploratory expeditions. The first was a joint French-Spanish-British trip to the South Atlantic, a voyage organized in part by the Royal Society of London. In 1829, Rear-Admiral Sir Francis Beaufort was appointed Hydrographer Royal. Under his management, the HO introduced the wind force scale named for him, as well as began issuing official tide tables (1833). It was under Beaufort that HMS Beagle completed several surveying missions, including its most famous voyage commanded by Captain FitzRoy with Charles Darwin onboard. When Beaufort retired in 1855, the HO had nearly two thousand charts in its catalogue. Later in the 19th century, the HO supported the Challenger expedition, which is credited with helping to found the discipline of oceanography. The HO participated in the International Meridian Conference which decided on the Greenwich Meridian as the Prime Meridian. Regulation and standardization of oceanic and navigational measures continued into the 20th century, with the HO participating at the first International Hydrographic Organization meeting in 1921. During World War II, the HO chart making facility moved to Taunton, the first purpose-built building it ever inhabited. In 1953, the first purpose-built survey ship went to sea, the HMS Vidal. Today, there is an entire class of survey vessels that make up the Royal Navy's Hydrographic Squadron. The HO began to computerize their charts in the late 1960s and early 1970s. In 1968, the compilation staff also came to Taunton, and the HO continues to work from there today.

Very good. Small area of surface scuffing with minor loss. One marginal mend away from printed image. Size 9.25 x 14 Inches. This is a rare vue d'optique or vue perspective of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia: the main port serving the cities of Mecca and Medina. It is the second-largest city of Saudi Arabia and is the country's commercial capital. Despite the long importance of this city, we are aware of no other depiction of the port prior to the mid 19th century. Mecca's Red Sea Port Although the view names the depicted port 'Lamekk,' (la Mecque, or Mecca), this is plainly imprecise, as that city lies well inland from the sea. The port and city shown, then, is Jeddah, the primary Red Sea port for the Hajj and an essential trading city. For Mondhare's audience, either city was so remote that the distinction would have been irrelevant. The View In sharp contrast with the modern city, the view (framed by a fanciful proscenium) does not evoke a remarkably busy port. Jeddah's medieval fortifications, as shown here, would not have impressed an 18th-century French audience, though the reader would have taken note of the crescent-topped domes and minarets. Ships can be seen in the distant Red Sea, and rowing launches ply the canal leading from the port to the open water. In the foreground are disorderly wharves strewn with barrels, cannon, munitions, and anchors. Figures in oddly European garb appear to pick through the detritus while, to the far right, a boy sits with his feet dangling off the pier, fishing. Perspective and Optical Views Vues d'optique or vues perspective were popular prints meant for viewing through a zograscope: a device employing a large lens and mirror to give an illusion of depth. Such views are characterized by strong linear perspective and subject matter appealing to armchair travelers: and indeed, few French owners of a zograscope would be likely to ever clap eyes on Jeddah - a good thing, given that the view here was probably produced without the artist having seen his subject. Publication History and Census Though the view bears no imprint, we are inclined to attribute it to the publishing house of Louis-Joseph Mondhare, based on the engraving style, content, and the hand of the title text. This view is rare. There is one copy in OCLC, cataloged at the Bibliothèque National de France, with no attribution. We are aware of only two or three that have appeared on the market. References: OCLC 691484379.
