Reliures uniformes, bel ensemble. JEAN-FRANCOIS GALAUP, COMTE DE LA PEROUSE (1741-1788). Voyage de La Pérouse Autour du Monde. Paris: Imprimerie de la République, An V, 4 text volumes, 4. (310 x 235mm) and 2. Atlas (608 x 450mm). engraved portrait of La Perouse after Tardieu, all half-titles, colophon leaf in vol. I-III, vol. IV colophon following index. Atlas with engraved allegorical title-page by Moreau le Jeune, titled 'Atlas du voyage de La Perouse' without imprint, and 69 engraved plates: folding world map, 35 views and natural history plates, 20 double-page maps and 13 single-page maps or coastal profiles. A portrait of La Perouse, a couple of the double-maps plates with light creasing, clear water stains on half pages of the Atlas, occasional light scattered spotting, soiling and damp staining. THE MOST IMPORTANT SCIENTIFIC EXPLORATIONS EVER UNDERTAKEN TO THE PACIFIC AND THE N.W. AMERICAN COAST, AND THE FIRST SCIENTIFIC VOYAGE TO CALIFORNIA. La Perouse, commanding the Astrolabe and Bussole sailed around Cape Horn for Easter Island and Hawaii before heading for the Aleutians and Alaska. Near Yakutat they optimistically named Lituya Bay 'Port des Francais' (some excellent views of which are included in the atlas), and continued south to California before crossing the Pacific to China, Japan and Kamchatka. From Macao, portions of his logs, journals and drawings were sent back to France, and from Kamchatka, Ferdinand de Lessups carried other reports across Siberia to Europe; thus the only records of the expedition were saved. UNIFORM SET IN THE ORIGINAL BINDINGS in half contemporary green morocco, water stains on half of the Atlas.

Hardcover. Zustand: Gut. Atlas to the English edition of the report of the famous voyage around the world by La Pérouse, who - in addition to Bougainville and Cook - contributed decisively to the exploration of the Pacific region. Without the two text volumes. ¶ Description: Contemporary quarter calf with marbled paper boards. Flat spine lettered and decorated in gilt. Quarto: 44 × 28.5 cm; unpag., 1 engr. frontispiece, 1 engr. title page and 67 full-page copper-engraved plates, thereof are: 37 plates and 30 maps (20 fold-outs). ¶ Ref.: Boucher i, p. 149-54; Cox i, 67; Sabin 3896 ¶ Condition: Binding a bit scuffed and with a few surface abrasions at edges. Light waterstains to the gutter of first few leaves. Contents occasionally somewhat soiled (more noticeable in the first few leaves), slight tanning at edges. Three small brown spots on plate 29, visible between plates 27-37. Lacking plates 1 (map of the world) and 36 (male and female Partridge of California). Some offsetting from plates. Despite the occasional minor blemish, a good copy. ¶ Notes: A first English edition appeared in London in 1798 for John Stockdale (2 vols. 8vo). Two other translations, were issued in 1798 and 1799 by two different publishers. J. Johnson, whose first appeared in 1798 and J. Robinson, whose first appeared in 1799. On the English editions, Cox writes: "On the unexpected publication of this famous voyage at Paris in the previous year (1797), there was considerable competition among English publishers to bring out the English translation. Three different translations were made and published during 1798-99, and different engravers were employed for making the plates. Stockdale's appeared first, in June 1798. Robinson's edition of 1799 is the most esteemed edition in English, later editions being usually based on it." The atlas bears the date 1798 in the imprint, but was published together with two text volumes in 1799. ¶.

The first edition of one of the most important scientific explorations ever undertaken to the Pacific and the northwest American coast, and the first scientific voyage to California. 'The voyage round the world under the command of La Pérouse was intended as the French equivalent of Captain Cook's Third Voyage and was enthusiastically endorsed by the Academy of Sciences and particularly by Louis XVI. The most significant results of the voyage are the charts of the then imperfectly known Asiatic coast of the Pacific' (Forbes). La Pérouse was the first explorer to navigate and chart the Japan sea and the strait between the island of Sakhalin and the northernmost island of Japan, which bears his name. At Kamchatka he received instructions to proceed to Australia to assess the extent of British plans. He arrived at Botany Bay in January 1788, just hours after Governor Phillip had arrived with the First Fleet. La Pérouse's habit of forwarding copies of journals and drawings when opportunity offered ensured their survival, for as is well known, the accomplishments of the voyage have been overshadowed by the disappearance of the entire expedition. The folio atlas contains magnificent maps of Russian Asia, Japan, the Pacific North-West Coast, Hawaii, San Francisco, and Monterey; the views include a fine series of botanical and ornithological plates, including the California quail. Of particular interest to Hawaii is the plate that depicts French ships off Makena, Maui. It is the first fully developed view of that island. In den WarenkorbBucareli Bay Double-page engraved chart. A chart of Bucareli Bay, in Alaska, first named in a 1775 by Juan Francisco de la Bodega y Quadra, commander of the ship 'Sonora', in honour of Antonio Maria de Bucareli y Ursúa, the Viceroy of New Spain. With a long note: "*This longitude is determined by La Pérouse's chart of the north west coast of America; the Spanish chart from which the present plan has been reduced fixes the longitude of Port Bucarelli at 140°15'". Published in the 'Charts and Plates to La Perouse's Voyage' to accompany 'A voyage round the world, performed in the years 1785, 1786, 1787, and 1788 by Boussole and Astrolabe, under the command of J.F.G. de La Pérouse. Published by order of the National assembly under the superintendence of L.A. Milet-Mureau' (1798-1799), an English translation of 'Voyage de La Perouse autour du monde'. An unabridged translation of the original edition in French of La Perouse's 'Voyage, autour du monde' (1797). The mapmaker Jean-François de Galaup, comte de La Pérouse (1741 - ?1788) was a French naval officer and navigator, whose expedition disappeared while exploring off the coast of Australia. La Perouse had an exemplary record in the French navy, commanding French vessels attacking Hudson Bay during the American War of Independence, and when the Paris Academy of Sciences decided to send an expedition to the Pacific to expand on the discoveries of Captain James Cook, he was a natural choice. The expedition set off in 1785, aiming to explore the northwest coast of America with a view to establishing a fur trade, stake a French claim on the American coast, and find a northwest passage to the Pacific. Louis XVI himself took a personal interest in the venture, keen for France to equal the discoveries made by their rival England under Captain James Cook. The expedition comprised two ships: 'La Boussole', under La Perouse's command, and the 'Astrolabe'. The expedition went first to Alaska, then headed south to California. They then sailed around into the Pacific (the commander of the 'Astrolabe' and eleven of his men were killed in Samoa) and headed to Australia after hearing the British were intending to begin a colony there. They arrived in Botany Bay after Arthur Phillips and his First Fleet convoy of convict ships, and after a few months of civil coexistence, set sail in March 1788. This was the last time that the expedition was seen alive. The ships had disappeared without trace, igniting a fever of speculation in France. La Perouse had sent copies of his expedition journal and maps back to France at every stop, ensuring that the voyage was well documented, and his last bulletin sent at Botany Bay had outlined his planned route. When he failed to reach Mauritius by December 1788 as planned, it raised fears; his wife Eléonore moved to Paris so she could hear news of him as soon as it came. Even during the turmoil of the Revolution, the Society of Natural History petitioned the National Assembly to send a rescue mission; Louis XVI supposedly asked after La Perouse on the way to the block. Their fate remained a mystery for almost half a century, until the English explorer Peter Dillon found French goods while trading with natives in Polynesia, indicating that 'La Boussole' and the 'Astrolabe' had visited Vanikoro, one of the Santa Cruz Islands (now the Solomon Islands). In 1828, the French explorer Jules-Sébastien-César Dumont d'Urville also visited the island, where locals told him that they had massacred men from ships wrecked nearby as they came ashore, although some of the crew managed to escape. D'Urville found wreckage from the 'Astrolabe' on reefs off the coast of Vanikoro, corroborating their story. None of the crew were ever found, although some of d'Urville's informants claimed that they had made a vessel and escaped, and a couple had apparently continued to live on the islands for some years, one of whom was identified as a "chief" by locals. It has been suggested that the remaining members of the expedition were still alive in 1790. Captain Edward Edwards, commanding the HMS 'Pandora', saw smoke signals from Vanikoro whilst searching for mutineers from the Bounty. He had already found fourteen in Tahiti, who were being held in a small cage on deck. Reasoning that mutineers would not advertise their position, he ignored them and sailed on, and the final chance of solving the mystery of the expedition was lost. The wreckage of La Boussole would not be found until 1964, and the ultimate fate of La Perouse remains unknown. Provenance Freycinet family archives Hill, 'Pacific', 975.
