First edition of "Ding" Darling's editorial cartoons regarding President Hoover. Octavo, original cloth, illustrated. Presentation copy, inscribed by Hoover on the front free endpaper, "To Mr. and Mrs. Ken Browne the good wishes of Herbert Hoover." Additionally inscribed by the author on the half-title page, "To the Ken Brownes With warm appreciation of friendship and kindred association over many years to you and all those who like Hoover hold high respect for the responsibilities of good citizenship in practice as well as idealism. Sincerely Jay N. Darling Ding." Edited by John M. Henry. Introduction by W.W. Waymack. In near fine condition. Ding Darling was an American cartoonist who won two Pulitzer Prizes. In 1900, Ding became a reporter for the Sioux City Journal. Following his marriage to Genevieve Pendleton in 1906, he began work with the Des Moines Register and Leader. In 1911, he moved to New York and worked with the New York Globe but went back to Des Moines in 1913. Three years later, in 1916, he returned to New York and accepted a position with the New York Herald Tribune. By 1919, Darling returned a final time to Des Moines where he continued his career as a cartoonist, winning the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning in 1924 and again in 1943. His cartoons were published from 1917 to 1949 in the New York Herald Tribune.
