Dr Javier Schnake's critical edition of the Pali text together with its commentary; lxvii, 184 pp. Ratanapanna's compendium of Buddhist teachings, composed in Lan Na in the 16th century, is unique in the field of Pali literature. Its contents is often encoded in riddles, double meanings, and acrostics. This compendium, intended for a highly educated audience well versed in Pali texts, encompasses not only doctrinal knowledge but also elements from the literature of protection that remain common in present day Thai Buddhist practice. The text thus testifies to the learned foundations of these elements, acting as locus of scholarly data, largely overlooked, which reflects the creativity of the literate milieu out of which it grew.
