Tove Jansson began her artistic career as a cartoonist. She debuted with a joke drawing in Garm when she was fifteen, and in the 30s and 40s she was the magazine's most popular illustrator. She illustrated texts and jokes, but also made up her own joke drawings, all with unmistakable artistic ambition. From 1938, more and more fearless political caricatures appear, made by Tove, i.a. some Hitler caricatures which caused great indignation in pro-German circles.
