Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -By synthesizing new data and offering novel analyses of the early medieval landscape in a region of shifting political and cultural boundaries, this volume traces how and when interactions developed among socially distinct groups across 'Bavaria Slavica' and Western Bohemia. Historical-linguistic analyses of Germanic and Slavic place names and lexical material are brought into dialogue with evidence for settlement processes - including new radiocarbon dating of Carolingian-Ottonian grave sites - within a shared geographic framework through GIS-based spatial analysis. Individual chapters address toponymy, historical-linguistic interpretation, and material culture, complemented by a Slavic lexicon reconstructed from the toponymic record of 'Bavaria Slavica'. Taken together, these studies provide an integrated basis for analyzing settlement and contact processes and offer a methodological template applicable to the investigation of frontier zones in other regions and periods.Universitätsverlag Winter GmbH Heidelberg, Dossenheimer Landstraße 13, 69121 Heidelberg 424 pp. Englisch.…

In den Warenkorbfester Einband. 353 S., Lit.verz. Reg. Kart. *neuwertig* The volume is addressed to one of the most fascinating issues in contemporary historical linguistics and medieval studies, which is the extremely fast expansion of the Slavic language across great parts of Europe in the Early Middle Ages. Traditionalists explain the spread of proto-Slavic as a result of migrations in the 6th7th century and associate that with a specific material culture and with early mentions of ethnic Slavs in written sources. Alternative hypotheses attribute the same evidence to linguistically and genetically quite varied communities and associate the later spread of proto-Slavic with its status as a 'lingua franca' or 'koiné'. The papers in the present volume interpret new methodological and empirical findings from several fields of study, not only from the traditional triad of linguistics, archaeology, and historiography, but also from adjacent disciplines such as religious studies, cultural anthropology, archaeogenetics, and others. The unifying thread is that the question of the relations between Slavic language, ethnicity, and material culture has differing answers in different geographical and political contexts. In den Warenkorbfester Einband. 221 S. Kart. *neuwertig* This is the first comprehensive monograph on Slavic nominal word-formation in English. It is a diachronic study of word-formation patterns in Proto-Slavic and their derivation from Proto-Indo-European. All conclusions about the origin of individual nominal suffixes, prefixes and compounding patterns are drawn from the reconstructed Proto-Slavic nominal lexicon. In this way, those word-formation patterns that can be attributed to Proto-Slavic can be distinguished from those that became productive independently in individual Slavic languages. The book contains a discussion of the meaning of Proto-Slavic nominal suffixes and prefixes, their origin and possible Proto-Indo-European sources, as well as an analysis of the accentual patterns associated with them. It also discusses in general outlines the productivity and development of individual nominal suffixes and prefixes in later stages of Slavic, including the major modern languages. Sprache: Deutsch.…
