OCLC Number / Unique Identifier:69063783.Dumbarton Oaks: .The Dutch Renaissance architect, painter, and engineer Hans Vredeman de Vries (1527-1607) had a long and successful career. He is best known today for his wide-ranging designs, which contributed to the dissemination of Renaissance ornamental forms, such as cartouches and grotesques, throughout Northern Europe. Although renowned for his significant volume on the application of linear perspective, Vredeman de Vries is also celebrated for his carefully worked-out perspective drawings. His works show knowledge of the architectural theorists Vitruvius and Sebastiano Serlio?whom he studied in Dutch translations published by Pieter Coecke van Aelst (1502-1550)?both in their design-oriented and theoretical aspects. Dumbarton Oaks holds several important titles that give a taste of Vredeman de Vries's versatility and prolificacy as an author and draftsman. In 1560, Vredeman de Vries produced his first series of architectural perspectives under the title Scenographiae sive Perspectivae for the publisher Hieronymus Cock (1518-1570). This set comprised twenty invented views of cities and buildings shown in meticulously conceived linear perspective. Aimed primarily at painters and amateurs, these fanciful prints were not intended for practicing architects. The subtitle asserts the publisher's privileges and printing rights, which Cock secured presumably in anticipation of the book's success. In 1562, he dedicated a similar set of twenty-eight architectural perspectives to Cardinal Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle (1517-1586), an advisor of King Philip II of Spain. Around the same time, Vredeman de Vries created a set of twenty symmetrically arranged architectural perspectives in oval frames, apparently meant as blueprints for intarsia workers. Cock dedicated this book to Peter Ernst (1517-1604), Count of Mansfeld, a courtier to Charles V and Philip II and governor of Luxembourg. Such dedications to notable art collectors and members of court helped the publisher to secure printing privileges and advertise the novelty of Vredeman de Vries's work. In 1601, this series was published by Theodoor Galle (1571-1633) together with Scenographiae sive Perspectivae under the title Architecturae variae formae.

First edition of Vredeman's "Perspective" issued by Hondius, and printed simultaneously also in French, Dutch and German. Present here is the valuable Latin version, "the classical language in which Vredeman's architecture is clad and thus becomes timeless in its character" (Millard, p. 20f.). This is one of the most celebrated works on such a subject and was issued by the Flemish born Hendrik Hondius the Elder (1573-1650). The plates for the most part are engraved and a few signed by him after Hans Vredeman. Plate 14 in part 2 is after Paul Vredeman, and 4 plates in this part are signed with the monogram DB (probably Theodore de Bry or Bartholomaeus Dolendo). The painter and architect Hans (or Jan) Vredeman de Vries was born 1527 to a German soldier in Leeuwarden, Netherlands and probably died in Antwerp 1604. "The King of Architects" (Fowler) together with Hans van Schille worked at the fortification of the city of Antwerp, and also at the triumphal arches built for the entry of the future Philip II into Antwerp in 1549. As a consequence of the religious upheavals of the period, Vredeman worked in Hamburg, Danzig and Prague before returning to Holland. He wrote and illustrated the present guidebook on perspective for designers, painters, and architects. It became one of the major books on this subject, and through Vredeman de Vries' various publications he is recognised as the "foremost among sixteenth century Netherlandish (architectural) authors" (Millard, p. 19). The two volumes illustrate stage perspective, interiors, furniture, palace and garden architecture. Vredeman de Vries was capable of truly artistic landscaping in the Northern Renaissance and served as a model for some patrician gardens in Germany (cf. E. Haupt, Baukunst der Renaissance in Frankreich und Deutschland, 1916). The book includes a number of scenes and projections employ one-and-multi-point perspective. These were essential demonstrations for artists of those days. This work on perspective summarizes Vredeman's knowledge of art, science, and geometry. This copy has the same collation as the Fowler copy at Johns Hopkins University library which also lacks at the beginning of vol. 1 the leaf A1v with an engraved portrait on left half and a printed poem on right half of this leaf. There are complete copies known, but in fact there is no copy of this Latin edition in the holdings of the BL London, the Royal Library The Hague, Utrecht, Dresden, Heidelberg, Beinecke or Centre d'Architecture at Montreal. The only two but incomplete copies in Austria are in the holdings of the University of Technology Library at Vienna, and in the Univ. Libr. Salzburg. The only copy in Switzerland in the holdings of the ETH- Library in Zurich is also incomplete and a mixed-up one (1st part in Latin, 2nd part in French). Other incomplete copies are known in the holdings of the Bavarian State Library Munich, the V & A Mus. (Aus dem Vorwort zum Ausstellungskatalog Hans Vredeman de Vries und die Renaissance im Norden, Weserrenaissance-Museum, 2002 ).- Beide Werke wurden bereits um 1565 unter anderen Titeln zuerst veröffentlicht, durchliefen zahlreiche Ausgaben und Übersetzungen in deren Verlauf sie an Umfang zunahmen und liegen durch die Herausgabe des Sohnes Paul Vredeman de Vries ab 1604 in neuer Form und mit neu gestochenen Tafeln vor. Die Stiche stammen zumeist von Hondius, im zweiten Teil der Perspective sind einige mit BD monogrammiert (Nr. 8, 10, 19 und 21). Der Stecher ist laut Nagler, Monogrammisten I, 1757 und Thieme-Becker IX, 390 Bartholomäus Dolendo (Leiden 1571-1621). Fowler nennt Johann Theodore de Bry (1561-1623), während der Katalog der Ornamentstichslg. Theodore de Bry (1528-1598) als Stecher erwähnt. Die Qualität der Abzüge ist durchgehend sehr gut, oft mit einem kräftigen Plattenton zeichnend, der Qualitätsabfall wird deutlich durch einen Vergleich mit dem digitalisierten Exemplar der Architectura aus dem Jahr 1638 in der Dresdner Bibliothek. Vergleiche hierbei besonders die letzten Nummern, 67, 69, 71, 73 ff. die die besonders prächtigen Tafeln am Ende des Werkes abbilden.- Schönes, insgesamt gut erhaltenes Exemplar. Die Tafeln illustrieren die fünf Säulenordnungen und zeigen anschließend einige besonders dekorative perspektivische Darstellungen von Innenräumen, Palästen, Arkaden mit Personenstaffage.- Das dritte Blatt Text ist knapprandiger und offensichtlich aus einem anderen Exemplar einer anderen Ausgabe ergänzt. Kurioserweise fehlt genau dieses Blatt, welches nach der Vorrede und einer Einführung den Anfang des eigentlichen Textes zu den Tafeln markiert, aber auch dem Exemplar der TU Wien sowie dem Exemplar einer Ausgabe von 1638 der SLUB Dresden. Berlin 2219.- Bei beiden Titelblättern ist der deutsche Text innerhalb der Bordüre vom Verleger auf dünnem Papier über den farnzösischen Text montiert worden. Titel von Band I mit kleinen Randläsuren und verso mit alt überklebtem Besitzvermerk, hinterer Vorsatz mit kleinem gekrönten Besitzerstempel. Das komplette Werk ist sowohl im Text als auch in den Tafeln auf Stege gezogen. Stellenweise etwas gebräunt, vor allem im Text von Band I, leichte Bräunung im oberen Rand und Innensteg, nur minimal fleckig. Einige wenige Rand- bzw. Falzeinrisse oder winzige Fehlstellen tls. hinterlegt, Kapitalbänder defekt. Insgesamt dennoch ein schönes und gut erhaltenes Exemplar dieser beiden seltenen Drucke.

An extraordinary collection of seventy-one 16th-century architectural prints and prints showing a wide variety of ornamental engraving intended for the use of architects and others. The present states of nearly all prints in the collection date from the period 1561 to 1585 and some plates were modified after the present printing…s, giving latest possible dates for their printing. In some series it is difficult to identify the watermarks, but most also point to a date around the 1580s. The prints from the four series by Vredeman de Vries (1527-1609) are especially notable not only for their artistic quality and the high quality of the engraving (mostly by Joannes and Lucas van Doetecum), but also for an extraordinary and detailed print showing about 40 musical instruments and another showing about 50 tools for gardening, farming and building (in wood, brick or stone) both in 1572. Also of special note are four prints that appear to have been separately published rather than forming part of a series, showing important monuments or events in Rome.
