ISBN 9789072736253. Hoewel de dodo al meer dan driehonderd jaar geleden is uitgestorven, geniet het dier nog steeds een ongekende populariteit. De dodo treedt op in stripverhalen en is te zien op draagtassen, tafelkleden, T-shirts, stropdassen en postzegels. Maar ondanks deze uitbundige belangstelling weet men nog steeds niet hoe het dier er precies heeft uitgezien. Publicaties, die verschenen in de tijd dat de dodo nog leefde, blijken veelal een samenraapsel van overschrijvingen, bewerkingen en verzinsels. Met wat er nog rest van de dodo is nauwelijks een boodschappenmand te vullen: twee schedels, een stuk snavel, een poot en een twintigtal uit losse beenderen samengestelde skeletten. Onze voorstelling van zijn uiterlijk is gebaseerd op een aantal zeventiende-eeuwse afbeeldingen, die onderling grote verschillen vertonen. We zien zwarte, bruine en witte dodo's. Dunne en monsterlijk dikke exemplaren. Soms staan ze hoog op de poten, soms zitten ze in elkaar gezakt en lijken nauwelijks tot lopen in staat. Talloze boeken zijn volgeschreven om deze afwijkingen te verklaren. Schrijvers meenden nog meer nieuwe soorten te ontdekken, bedachten oplossingen voor de verschillen in omvang en lieten hun fantasie de vrije loop. De verwarring is door de tijd alleen maar groter geworden. Jan den Hengst heeft als eerste de moeite genomen de zeventiende-eeuwse afbeeldingen zorgvuldig te vergelijken en komt na 25 jaar van onderzoek en studie tot verrassende conclusies. Door bovendien de teksten van ooggetuigen aan een kritisch onderzoek te onderwerpen heeft hij uiteindelijk het portret van de dodo gereconstrueerd. Het onderzoek van Jan den Hengst heeft geresulteerd in een bijzonder aantrekkelijk boek. Het is informatief, terzake kundig, historisch, rijk geïllustreerd en bovendien prettig leesbaar.
