Nowhere else in the West is Chinese and Japanese porcelain so clearly a part of daily life. Asian porcelain has graced interiors in The Netherlands for centuries, largely due to the enormous quantities imported during the 17th and 18th centuries by the VOC (Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie, Dutch East India Company). Many Dutch museums thus include splendid examples of Chinese and Japanese export porcelain in their collections. This book introduces some of the most beauti- ful and interesting pieces from the following four museums: Haags Gemeentemuseum, the Groninger Museum, the Princessehof Leeuwarden and the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam. Besides an overview of Oriental export porcelain since the 14th century, this combined presentation by these museums also emphasises The Netherlands' remarkable wealth in this area. A brief introduction to each museum's collec- tion of Oriental porcelain and its provenance is followed by a selection of fifteen excellent examples from their collections.
