Spine, gilt titles, edges repaired, worn a little along the joints. Internally, [2], [3], (iv) only, [1], 6-65, [1], 2 maps, [1], 68-195, [1], 1 map, [4] adverts, original endpapers, pencil name to verso fep, lacks half title, a few light marks, edges uncut, printed by Bradbury and Evans, Whitefriars, London. (Penzer p74. Casada 49. Alibone 261). Title continues: pt. 1. Showing Tanganyika to be Ptolemy's western lake reservoir : a memoir read before the Royal Geographical Society, November 14, 1864 ; with prefatory remarks / by Richard F. Burton -- pt. 2. Captain Speke's discovery of the source of the Nile : a review / by James M'Queen (reprinted by permission from the Morning advertiser). "The melancholy event of September 15th, 1864, which cast a gloom over our meetings at the pleasant "Bath Association," precludes the possibility of my entering into any questions of a private or a personal nature. It would, of course, have been far more congenial to my feelings to have met Captain Speke upon the platform, and to have argued out the affair before the scientific body then assembled. I went down fairly to seek this contest on September 13th. The day for the discussion was appointed for September 16th. Some hundreds of persons were assembled in the rooms of Section E, and when I appeared there it was only to hear that my quondam friend and Nile rival had on the previous afternoon lost his life by the merest accident. I had seen him at 13.0 P.M.; at 4 P.M. he was a corpse.".

In den WarenkorbFirst edition. 8vo., xx, 288pp., 16 pages ads dated June 1st 1891 at end, large folding map(offset, short tear at fold), uncut in modern straight-grained calf gilt, a very good copy. An uncommon account. M'Queen, the owner of plantations in Grenada in the West Indies, collected extensive information, principally from slaves but also from a study of Arab geographers, which led him correctly to the conclusion that the Niger ended in the great delta of the Bight of Benin. Not being a member of the geographical establishment, little notice was taken of his account at the time and many bizarre theories were put forward before M'Queen's thesis was accepted. From the collection of Edward Pease, founder of the Stockton-Darlington Railway and often referred to as the 'Father of the Railways'.

In den WarenkorbLondon: Baldwin, Cradock, and Joy. 1824. 8vo. Contemporary diced calf, rebacked and with wear to corners; pp. xxvi. [20], 427, additional errata slip at the end of preliminaries; new fly-leaf at end, repair to corner of final leaf, a good copy, complete with half-title and errata slip. Very rare first edition of this defence of slavery, written by one of Britain's staunchest Anti-Abolitionists. 'MacQueen's position on the issues had not changed since 1820, though it seemed it had since his arguments became increasingly hardened, extreme, persona1 and narrow as the emancipation debate progressed through the latter 1820s' (Jeffrey David Pardue, Agent of Imperial Change: James MacQueen and the British Empire, 1778-1870 p. 71). In defending slavery the author gives much statistical material relating to the West Indies and reveals the mind-set of the profiteers of a society whose wealth is to a great extent based on slavery.
