In den WarenkorbNo Binding. Zustand: Near Fine. 1st Edition. original etching with copper line-engraving of a South View of Bangalore, one Mile & a half distant on the Road to Seringapatam by James Fittler (1758-1835) after sketches Robert Home (1752-1834) had made when he had accompanied the troops in Lord Cornwallis's campaign against Tipu Sultan in 1792. Originally published for Robert Home's 'Select Views in Mysore, the country of Tippoo Sultan' published in London in 1794. Image size approximately 140mm x 190mm with excellent margins for framing. A generally VG bright clean impression with just a very faint crease mainly to lower left hand margin of this scarce eighteenth century engraving. Please note the actual engraving is much more clearer and vibrant than that shown in the illustration. In the late 18th century, the Muslim rulers Haidar Ali (r.1761-1782) and his son Tipu Sultan (r.1782-1799) fought numerous wars against the British over the control of Southern India. The Fort at Bangalore was captured by the British in 1791. Eight years later, the conflict was concluded in favour of the British at Seringapatam where Tipu Sultan died. This view shows the remains of a temple structure on the road connecting the two towns.

A uniformly bound, two volume set of letters and memoirs from Lord and Lady Russell, William Russel, and Rachael Wriothesley. This set contains two works: 'The Life of William Lord Russell, With Some Account of The Times in Which He Lived' and 'Some Account of the Life of Rachael Wriothesley Lady Russell'. William Lord Russell was an English politician. He was a leading member of the Country Party, forerunners of the Whigs, who during the reign of King Charles II, laid the groundwork for opposition in the House of Commons to the accession of an openly Catholic king in Charles's brother James. It also contains a folding plate of a facsimile letters from Lord Russell and Lady Russell. Lady Russell, or Rachael Wriothesley, was an English noblewoman, heiress, and author. Her second husband was William, Lord Russell, who was implicated in the Rye House Plot and later executed. This work on her life was edited by Mary Berry, the editor of Madame Du Defand's Letters. It also includes a series of letters from Lady Russell to her husband from 1672 to 1682 as well as some miscellaneous letters to and from Lady Russell. Both works contain a previous owner's ink inscription to the front free-endpapers: 'W.R. Harper, 1843'. Bound in half calf with marble covered boards.
