Created in 1777 from Fincastle County, which originally covered all of western Virginia including Kentucky, Montgomery has been very important in the development of region. You will note that these deed records start before the creation of the county which means settlers had been coming into the region very early and staking claims to lands. Each of the abstractions of the deeds give the names of the parties, dates, neighbors, witnesses and signature. In many cases, when the party/parties could not read and write, they made their mark and we have duplicated those marks as best as we could. [VA0137].…

These records are recorded in their original version and reflect the rations given to the various members of the Creek Nation at Camp Clanewaugh near Ross' Landing [now Chattanooga, TN] prior to their leaving for the west. The original of this is found in a private collection of records. According to the author: 'The enclosed 1832 Census of the Creek Nation of Indians was taken by Benjamin S. Parsons and Thomas J. Abbott. It was taken under the authority of the Second Article of the Treaty concluded with the Creek at Washington City on 24th of March 1832. The Census is taken first by the Upper and Lower Towns and then by the Towns themselves. 'In this census, there is the name of the head of the household followed by four sets of numbers. The first of these numbers represents the number of males in the household followed by the number of females. The third set represents the number of slaves in the household and the final set is a grand total of all persons living in the household. 'From the earliest time, the Creek Nation included the area from the Savannah River south to the St. John's River, west to Apalachee Bay and then from this area northward to the Appalachian Mountain. By the time of the Census, the two division were more limited in their range. The Upper Towns [the Western portion of the tribe] were found on the Coosa and Tallapoosa two main branches of the Alabama River. The Lower Towns [also known as the Eastern portion of the tribe] were found along the Chattahoochee and Flint rivers near the present Alabama-Georgia Border. 'Like all of the Five Civilized Tribes, the Creeks began their westward migration in the 1820-1830's early and continued until forced later to move west. The first portion to immigrate were from the Lower Towns and were called the McIntosh Party. They arrived in the Indian Territory in 1828 and settled north of the Arkansas River. The majority of the Upper Towns came later in the 1836 migration and settled in the area between the Canadian and the North Fork Rivers.' [GN-0108-M].…

Soft cover. Zustand: New. No Jacket. In December of 1835, the State of Tennessee mandated each of the counties at that time to draw district lines within the bounds of the county. At the time of the 1836 tax, the monies were to be collected within these districts. The districts were also used for voting and schools areas later on. The commissioners were to submit a diagram of that county, but they could not use any professional help in doing so. A written description was to accompany the drawing. In the case of Shelby, this description is missing. The first tax list for Shelby is the 1837 that has survived. The listing of persons living in that district will help the researcher know where the persons live. In case a deed is given, these are usually noted per district and so when there are multiple individuals of the same name in a given area, the deed plus district designation will help to distinguish which individual one is referring to in their research. Also, the tax list will frequently given more names than the census as the tax collector would not have missed anyone in their gathering of information. In this listing, we have given only the number of acres and/or lots a persons owns for taxing purposes. The original has more details, but no more names than this. Making these records available for the first time, will enable researchers into the history of lower east Tennessee to gain a better appreciation for the life and times of those who have gone before us.
