Hardcover. Zustand: As New. The book analyses the demographic, economic, educational, socio-cultural and religious changes in the Jain community of Bundelkhand that have occurred within the span of two-three generations. For centuries the Jains of Bundelkhand, mainly the followers ofTerapanth Digambar Jainism, have been involved in trade and commercial activities. Their socio-cultural attitude has been characterised by conservatism and religious orthodoxy. However, for the past few decades, mainly due to the impact of modern education this over-all situation has significantly been changing for the better. How, why and to what extent these changes have affected the contemporary Jain community of Bundelkhand is the main focus of this study. It also covers some eminent Jain personalities in different walks of life.It is argued that the economic, educational and occupational aspects of the community have changed relatively much faster than socio-cultural and religious aspects. The readers, scholars and all the stakeholders in the subject may find the book useful.…

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 2nd Edition. Jainism, one of the oldest religions of the world, found its philosophy, rituals and ethical code in the teachings of Lord Mahavira, the twenty-fourth tirthankara of Jainism. Though its reach was confined only to the Indian subcontinent for more than two-and-a-half millennia, from the twentieth century onwards, it made its presence felt across the globe, mainly in the US, the UK, Europe, East Africa and Nepal, and in smaller numbers in many other parts of the world, through its diasporic population. This book thus profiles the salient demographic as well as sociological features of the Jain communities in India and abroad. The Jains have been a minority community consisting of less than 1 per cent of Indian population in modern times. The current population of the Jains is estimated around six million. Its diasporic communities consist of about 300,000. Despite its miniscule size, the community's contributions to the Indian society in different realms are quite commendable, be it education, trade and commerce, politics or in running and efficiently managing charitable institutions. Other demographic features include its high literacy rate, lowest infant mortality rate and appreciable sex ratio (954 in 2011). Their approach and attitude towards all living beings stand tall among all religious communities of the world. The book further features other socio-religious aspects of the Jain community along with its way of life, social identity, organizational features such as sects, castes, kinship, family and marriage, food, festivals and pilgrimage, Jain associations, and status of contemporary Jain women. The economic and political status of the Jains, their inter-ethnic relations, and the Jains' historical and civilizational contribution to Indian culture and society are also vividly addressed. It navigates scholars and researchers to a wide range of areas in Jain studies for further researches.…

Sharma. 3. Jain Population, 1881 1971/Vilas A. Sangave. 4. Jains in India: How Many and Where?/M.K. Jain. 5. A Demographic Analysis on the Jains/M.K. Jain. 6. Jains in the Censuses of 1991 and 2001/Prakash C. Jain. 7. Jain Population and Demography, 2011/Prakash C. Jain. 8. Some Notes on the Jain Diaspora/Prakash C. Jain. 9. Jain Population Predicament: Need to Learn from the Parsi and Jewish Situations/Sulekh C. Jain and Yashwant K. Malaiya. 10. Under-Enumeration of Jain Population : Evidence from Two Delhi Surveys/Shugan C. Jain and Prakash C. Jain. During the ancient and medieval periods of Indian history, Jainism was a widely-spread religion all over the country, perhaps mainly due to royal patronage and/or protection. In modern times however, the number of its adherents has been reduced to minuscule proportions counting as low as about 1.2 million in 1921. Subsequently, the Jain population increased to about 1.6 million in 1951 census, and to about 4.5 million in 2011. Though small in number, today the Jains are to be found in all the states and union territories of India. This major trading community is highly concentrated in the western half of the country, particularly Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. This anthology consisting of ten chapters written by distinguished experts on the subject, delineates the major demographic trends in the Jain population dynamics of India as they unfolded from census to census, from 1881 to 2011. Inter alia the book also highlights the socio-demographic problems and prospects of the Jain community in terms of urbanization, inter-state migration, low fertility rate, skewed gender ratios and their impact on marriage, highest literacy and yet the low work participation rate among the Jain women, etc. The book also includes a chapter on the population of Jains who live abroad, and another on under-enumeration of Jain population in Delhi in 2011 census. The book would be a useful compendium for the experts as well as lay persons on the subject of Jain population and demography as it consolidates the available knowledge, census data and its analysis at one place. Jain narrative as well as canonical literature indicates that the first tirthankara of Jains, Lord Adinath, was the founder of work and knowledge-based culture in India. He taught people how to live as communities and adhere to certain prearranged rules of coexistence and cooperation. He prescribed six different skills to be acquired by his subjects for worldly activities like (i) Asi (swordsmanship for protection), (ii) Masi (writing skills), (iii) Krishi (agriculture), (iv) Vidya (knowledge), (v) Vanijya (trade and commerce) and (vi) Shilp (crafts). These skills not only help in creating worldly wealth but also assist individuals and communities to live happily with overall prosperity. Following the path shown by Lord Adinath and subsequent tirthankaras. The Jain society from ancient times has been engaged in business activities with ahimsa (non-violence) as their guiding principle. Owing to this principle of ahimsa, we do find trends of the Jain community being engaged in commerce and trade. The historical trajectory of mercantile characteristics among the Jains continued till date and since India's Independence, many renowned Jains have contributed to the development of India. This book documents the conceptual foundation of Jain tenets with reference to the Western approach toward business ethics; it also covers biographies of successful Jain entrepreneurs in the past and present. Apart from the details on the conceptual framework of Jain Business Ethics and Jain Business Engagements through the ages, it also contains various essays on Jain Values and Entrepreneurship. This book is an academic attempt to examine the Jain religion as an Eastern case study, which will be of interest to readers, who are looking for an alternative perspective in light of contemporary worries about global business and economic systems.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - There are men who speak their love out loud. And then there are men like Chandra Prakash Jain - men whose love is quiet, whose strength holds entire families together without ever demanding to be seen.Born into humble family in a small village near Agra, Chandra walked barefoot through cracked fields carrying firewood before he was ten. He survived a near-fatal accident at fourteen. He cycled fifteen kilometres before dawn to sell newspapers for three hundred rupees. He completed his education while working three jobs - and never once complained. Then came marriage, twin sons, and responsibilities that would have crushed most men. Every single morning for thirty-two years - without missing a day - he fed over seventy stray animals before the city woke up. No one gave him an award. No one wrote him a headline. No one asked him to.Now, on the eve of his retirement, his son pieces together the fragments of a life lived in service, sacrifice, and unspoken love - interviewing family, friends, and colleagues to uncover stories he never knew. What emerges is not just a portrait of one remarkable man, but a mirror held up to every family where someone carried everything and said nothing. The Silent Strength is a memoir about the heroes who never ask to be called heroes. It is about fathers, mothers, and the quiet acts of love we recognise only when we become parents ourselves. This is one man's story. But it could be yours.…
